I pulled the trigger tonight and signed up for the 5k.  I've done a marathon but never a solo 5k(only during tri's).  Is it wrong that I am nervous already (maybe its just excitement or the spaghetti I had for dinner)?

Couldn't pass up the sweet shirt and the opportunity to get up at 5am to drive downtown with TrishM.  Trish, costumes???

By the looks of the course maps: http://www.theparade.org/turkeytrot/course.php (BTW, if someone could PM me the instructions on how to insert a pretty hyperlink on this board I'd appreciate it) they are doing a special corral for those in costume again on the right hand side of the "circle" at Grand Circus.  This turned out to be huge last year as 10,000 plus runners had to fight the start, whereas about 100 or less costumed runners had about a 100 yard stretch before they met up with the crowd and were at the front of the pack.

For those in costume Thursday, my wife and I will be Santa & Mrs Claus.  We are up in the air if the kids will be our elves doing the 5K while we do the 10K.

We're officially in...packets picked up too.  The shirts are awesome!

I'll have to work on some costume ideas this weekend...need to figure out what won't drive me nuts over the course of a 10K.

Hey all, I've got an FYI on Cobo Garage Parking.  My wife & I parked there for the Freep and it was a total mess, mostly because they didn't think ahead (shocking for Detroit, I know) to open the garage before 6AM, and when they did, they only had one attendant.  I shot a quick email to Turkey Trot's Race Director letting him know about the Freep mess and received the following reply:

I will make sure that the garage is open at 5:30am.  We also plan to have a volunteer checking for passes.

I hope it goes smoother for you than the Free Press, we want you to have fun at our event!

 Doug

Let me get this straight - you need a ticket/pass to park in certain locations and most of these locations are sold out??  Weird.  My sister and I've parked atop Cobo for the past several years, but now you need a pass for that?!

Unfortunately, Yes.  If you can find out if/when it'll be open, Ford Underground is an excellent alternative and is where I parked last year.  When I came down for the Freep, it was closed, which is why I kept going to Cobo.  There is also plenty of lot parking over by Tom's Oyster Bar on Beubien (sp???) too.

Don't trust the People Mover, this was part of the reason so many folks flodded the race day sign up so late last year to the point they just turned folks loosed as bandits.

I wonder why they felt the need to change the parking plan??  I'm guessing a fair amount of runners won't have read about the change in parking and will thus create even more bottlenecks when they realize they can't access, say the roof at Cobo.

I'm in for the 10k.  Don't have a costume, but was thinking about running in my flannel PJs...just jump out of bed, strap the running shoes on and go! lol

For a meeting place, there's a statue of a woman in front of a building on the corner of Jefferson and Woodward (on the Jefferson side).  How 'bout we meet by the statue between 7-7:30?  I'll be the 6'3" guy in an elf costume

I need a costume idea.  I don't have a creative bone in my body.  Definitely dominated by the scientific/mathematical side of my brain.  I need help from all you creative people.  Ideas?

I think we're riding with some friends, so not sure what time I'll be down there.  I'll be dressed as a piece of candy corn...Eric will be a pilgrim.

Jo- one of my other ideas was to make myself into a cornucopia with my body in brown/twine to look like a basket and my head as a piece of fruit amongst other fruit around my shoulders.  Pilgrims are super easy though...you could have a black running outfit, white collar, white apron, and a bonnet.  I also thought about being a big turkey drumstick...thought that would be funny.

I've obviously spent too much time thinking about costuming for this race!! Smile

As a 5'6" Santa, I'll have to try and find and run with you for at least a few seconds to look like a scence from Elf!

My wife and I will likely hang around inside Cobo until about 25 'til.  Its plenty big, plenty warm & only a 10 minute walk to the start.

What a great morning for a run!!!!  Wanted to get in here 1st and apologize to anyone who ran in a costume based on my recommendation of a private corral, I swear there was one last year!  Truth is, I'd a wore the Santa Suit regardless.

Jo, Trish & Ranger, pleasure to meet the 3 of you and I look forward to future meet ups!!!

It's hard not to be impressed with the Metro-Detroit running community, bringing out over 14,000 runners.  Although, the cookie/candy cane "stop" was a little underwhelming.  Ran with my wife and a buddy at my wife's pace.  The hour flew by chatting it up and taking it all in.  Happy Thanksgiving all!

Great race everyone!!  Sorry that I didn't make it to the naked lady in time to meet you all.  We got there a little late and then had to hit the bathroom.

Trish and Jo as always it was awesome seeing you two   Met up with Ranger Dave at the end and saw Cheryl and Eric dressed as pilgrims on our way out.

14000 runners!!! Man that was a trip.  My Garmin put the run at a total of 6.39 miles, but the extra .2 might have been because I was having to zig-zag all over the road to get through the crowd!  Nevertheless it was a blast.  I ran with my neighbor and his son - both running in their first 5k and they really enjoyed it.

Ted, it was great to meet you and Mrs. Claus!

Coop, thanks for the technology I failed at using! :-)  Cutest Giant elf ever!

Ranger, as always, a blast to race with you!

MSUDan!  It was so good to see you!  I hope you had fun with Samantha!

To everybody I missed...BOOOO!  We really need to get more organized...Next year we meet at the statue in Cobo and walk to the start together!!!

Happy Thanksgiving All!  Enjoy the pie!  WE EARNED IT

We had a blast once we %$#%ing got parked!!  There was definitely some road rage involved with getting into the Joe Louis Arena lot.  HORRIBLE planning, just HORRIBLE...next time we'll park at greektown and train in.

That said, running the 10k was a blast- I wore cap and gown with "4 Hire" on my cap next to hubby dressed as a giant reindeer with a fake baby santa in our baby bjorn on his tummy.  He got soooo many laughs!  Good times.  Sorry we didn't see anyone at the start (reference start of post....).

We didn't stick around afterwards as Cobo appeared to be a giant mosh pit- was there water or snacks anywhere??
