Sunny
Total Time = 1h 39m 4s
Overall Rank = 263/480
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 35/50
Pre-race routine:

Got up at 5:00 am, took a shower and ate MetRx drink with banana. Left house at 5:40. Drank Cytomax on the way, ate energy bar at 6:30.
Event warmup:

Stretch
Swim
  • 12m 23s
  • 500 yards
  • 02m 29s / 100 yards
Comments:

The start went great, had a good pace but then I couldn't seem to catch my breath. Swam the whole distance freestyle but with head above water for the last 1/2 which was great for sighting but not for my pace! Need to warmup in the water prior to start for next race to get acclimated, I think this will help the breathing thing.
What would you do differently?:

Warm up in water next time, work on open water swims (need to find somewhere) every one to two weeks if possible.
Transition 1
  • 02m 59s
Comments:

need to work on getting the wetsuit off faster
Bike
  • 55m 30s
  • 14.8 miles
  • 16.00 mile/hr
Comments:

Felt slow, I had the aerobic capacity but was limited by muscular endurance
What would you do differently?:

After 6 months of base training it's time to do some tempo (zone 3) and interval (zone 4 and 5a) work before next race. Also need more hill training.
Transition 2
  • 01m 10s
What would you do differently?:

take a gel at this point next race
Run
  • 27m 2s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 08m 43s  min/mile
Comments:

Again, limited by muscular endurace not aerobic capacity. Not suprising considering I haven't done any training above zone 2 yet.
What would you do differently?:

Start tempo and interval training in addition to maintaining aerobic capacity.
Post race
Warm down:

Short walk, some stretching, drank water, had some fruit.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Overall I was happy with my race.Optimistic goal was 1:30 and realistic goal was 1:40. Lack of tempo, interval training limited my performance. Need to start for next race.

Event comments:

Plan to do this race again next year!

Congratulations Jim! Looks like you put in some great times. Sorry we didn't run into each other pre or post race, but you probably passed me on the run Are you planning on doing "Patriot's" again this year?

Hey Jim we were almost neck and neck. I finished in 1 hour 34 minutes. I had some difficulty getting the wetsuit off too. So much for bodyglide, next time I'm trying Pam, and maybe actually practice. Training for my next race will include lots of hill riding. Where do you ride? Here in Quakertown its pretty flat. I'm going to head towards the Delaware, Durham township and Northampton County. And more bricks! Are you doing bicycle crossings in Allentown July 10?

Hi Christine. Looks like we were very close to each other. Did you meet your goals?  It was very nice to meet you and your friends. I ride up here in East Allen Township where I live, near the airport not to far from the base of the Poconos so there are some good hills. Do you do any open water training? I want to get some in before my next race. I also plan on doing the bicycle crossing sprint in July. Hopefully we won't have to swim against the current in the Lehigh for to long!

I did meet my goal, which was to go home feeling as if I didn't wimp out on myself. My run pace was actually slower than my pace at Patriots last year so I'm not thrilled with that. I did the Runners World 1/2 too and did alot of LSD but not much speedwork, went to the track Sunday and started fixing that. My friends did great. Jen actually placed 3rd in her AG even though she couldn't find her running gear after the bike. Christy had someone swim over her which freaked her out so she flipped over on her back and did the backstroke the whole way.

The three of us had a pow wow at the Y this morning and we are going to go up to Beltsville to do some open water swim practice. We also were kicking ourselves for not warming up in the lake B4 hand.

The Bicycle Crossings should be interesting. I was checking out the "river" during the RW1/2 and doesn't look big enough to swim in.
