(swimming 100m time) Gaarryy - 2009-11-19 10:14 AM bzgl40 - 2009-11-18 8:47 PM this tread is depressing not really you will get faster, and it's something to think about. that there are always faster people than you, especially the ones that just do one sport. when I was swimming with our masters group, the one end of the pool was all ex college swimmers, just flying. the other side were us triathletes. I'd finish a workout proud of my new time, then talk with the actual swimmers, and just laugh at my time I had a nice laugh at my time looking at a NCAA meet for the 1650.. even for the women, most 100 yard splits were less than one minute (for the winning time) I think finishing in something like 16:30 or so. That's pretty smokin fast, and I think the men average 50-55 per 100. (SCY) |

Yeah, I should have used red font I guess, although it's a tiny bit depressing I think it is time to get past my intimidation of swimming with the masters and just go do it. |

(swimming 100m time) Dlaxman31 - 2009-11-18 4:38 PM Okay all of you college and high school swimmers are crazy fast and after starting this thread I now realize how slow I really am. I think the takeaway from this thread should be that most people have lots of room to improve in their swimming! Like everything else, it just takes hard work and time. The perception that these times are ridiculously fast in in part indicative of the poor state of swimming in triathlon (plenty of good cyclists and runners, not so many good swimmers). Work hard and you'll get better! With good effort people with no swimming background can be top 20% or even top 10% swimmers in triathlons. Also, keep in mind that the sub 50 second 100 yd times people are posting aren't something they can get close to today, could never hold for more than 100 yds, were with a dive, were in yards not meters, and were swum when they concentrated only on swimming. It makes them sound fast, but by college swimming standards these "fast" times were posted by mediocre-to-relatively-good former DIII swimmers or mediocre former DI swimmers (with TJ and likely docswim as exceptions to the mediocre part!). As a former mediocre DIII swimmer, I'm always humbled when I see people with little or no swim background become fast! Brian |

Master 1286 Mt Pleasant, SC | Subject: RE: Whats your time??? (swimming 100m time) Hello I was thinking about my beginner times. Should the question be What is your 100meter average over the course of 500 meters or 1000 meters? That would be a more realistic number. Just my thoughts Kevin |

(swimming 100m time) b2673ad - 2009-11-19 8:00 AM furiousferret - 2009-11-18 7:18 PM 1:50, slowest person here =\ Hello I could not swim 25 meters in July. My personal record is currently 3 min 2 sec but I am going to pool tonight and will retest. Check the results at 9 PM EDT. My issue will be that I may go much faster for the opening 100 but over the course of 1000 meters I am averaging out at 3 min 20 sec for 100 meters. My goal for the winter is to get my 1000 meter average below 3 min per 100 in a pool but at the rate I am improving that may happen in the next 4 weeks then I will set a new goal. I now have the title for the slowest 100 meter time but I am newbe. Check my swimming thread out down in the Clydesdale section if you would like to offer some tips. I did do a sub 10 minute 400 meter OWS in my last race so I do have race day hope. Kevin Here is the 100 meter update for me. Pool swim 25 meter pool no flip turns 100 meter 2 min 25 seconds. Getting better each week Kevin |

(swimming 100m time) Bioteknik - 2009-11-19 6:16 AM sand101 - 2009-11-19 12:33 AM Since I have ramped up swimming from 25 years off earlier this year I have only done a 50yd full sprint and came in at 28.00. I'd be faster now. For 100yds (short course) I have clocked a 1:11 with an in-pool start, swim trunks, and open turns. Wasn't sprinting it - just a hard interval set. I need to clock one off the blocks in a decent suit with real turns (I never do flip turns in practice - energy expensive and they don't help OWS). I figure I could dip under 1:05, but 1:00 would be a stretch. well I can think of a few reasons why flip turning would help out for OW training, but that will probably derail the argument. Point being though.. how much time is saved(over OWS) per 100 by flip turning(in a SC pool)? 3 seconds, 5 seconds? I can't think of any reasons why flip turns help in OW. Have to disagree there. On your other question the time saved is pretty significant. Right now the world records for long course (1 turn) is ~47 seconds. For short course it is ~44 seconds. So at the world class level a flip turn is worth 1.5 seconds per. For us mere mortals? Not sure, but probably something similar. So you probably lose 4-5 seconds or so per 100 in an OWS versus short course practice. |

Extreme Veteran 438 Surprise, AZ | Subject: RE: Whats your time??? (swimming 100m time) It is also has a huge advantage if you flip turn correctly. I do not flip I just grab the wall and turn and the other day I was shoulder to shoulder with a guy who flip turned and I was one arm length behind him within one second. I could not believe how much ground I lost on that flip turn. |

Elite 5316 Alturas, California | Subject: RE: Whats your time??? (swimming 100m time) Yups I agree pretty depressing to see just how many folks swim twice as fast as I do. Oh well, after I get this marathon out of the way I can start swimming more than twice a week. My IM swim was 2:00 / 100. I usually race around that. My first year swimming was 100,000 yards total (2008). This year should be 250,000 yards ish. Next year hopefully more like 300,000 to 350,000. I don't know that I will ever get fast at swimming, no coach within 100 miles, but I would like to. |

Every additional skill that you learn in the water helps you be more comfortable, gain confidence, and be less likely to freak out under any circumstances (such as mass OWS starts or in choppy water). This is the same reason that bilateral breathing, swimming without a nose clip, and other "optional" skills all contribute to better overall performance. |
