sand101 - 2009-11-19 12:33 AM Since I have ramped up swimming from 25 years off earlier this year I have only done a 50yd full sprint and came in at 28.00.  I'd be faster now.

For 100yds (short course) I have clocked a 1:11 with an in-pool start, swim trunks, and open turns.  Wasn't sprinting it - just a hard interval set.  I need to clock one off the blocks in a decent suit with real turns (I never do flip turns in practice - energy expensive and they don't help OWS).  I figure I could dip under 1:05, but 1:00 would be a stretch.

well I can think of a few reasons why flip turning would help out for OW training, but that will probably derail the argument.

Point being though.. how much time is saved(over OWS) per 100 by flip turning(in a SC pool)?  3 seconds, 5 seconds?

I can't think of any reasons why flip turns help in OW.  Have to disagree there.

On your other question the time saved is pretty significant.  Right now the world records for long course (1 turn) is ~47 seconds.  For short course it is ~44 seconds.  So at the world class level a flip turn is worth 1.5 seconds per.  For us mere mortals?  Not sure, but probably something similar.  So you probably lose 4-5 seconds or so per 100 in an OWS versus short course practice.

Minor hijack -
Flip turns do help your OWS abilities, but indirectly.  Every additional skill that you learn in the water helps you be more comfortable, gain confidence, and be less likely to freak out under any circumstances (such as mass OWS starts or in choppy water).  This is the same reason that bilateral breathing, swimming without a nose clip, and other "optional" skills all contribute to better overall performance.

agree, but I think there are direct benefits as well. Topic has been beaten into the ground but bottom line, if you can flip, you do.

I don't do flip turns, for my own reasons, and I'd say open water is my strong point.

Flip turns take the possibilty of using the wall as a crutch(extra rest) out of the equation, so I'd agree that they are good to learn. Not that not doing them is going to hold you back either.

...

So how fast can you do it?  Now this is only one set not repeat sets.

I think that is a personal question.

I have swam a stand-alone 100 meters, once, around 1:52.  That's a HUGE accomplishment for me.  I'm not a swimmer and was quite proud of that.

Well off the block in short course yards my best is a 53.74; for a 500 in SCY I average about a 1:01. I have no idea meters, I haven't swam long course In two or three years

Agree - if you can flip, you do.  Flip turns should be done from the core - and correct swim form should involve power from the core.  I believe that will help indirectly in the ows.  I also think it is good practice in lung capacity - especially if you push yourself to take a pull or two before breathing.  I would agree also that if does help boost your comfort in the water.  All of that being said, nothing is going to help in OWS like practicing your OWS.

From what I have read this does not help with actual performance.  Which seems counterintuitive to me, so I'd love to be corrected on the point.

Those are some great times! Over the past few years I have noticed more and more swimmers getting into triathlon, especially the Oly distance. It can be pretty lonely out there on the bike for the first part of the ride then down right depressing as the runners fly by you like you're standing still.

The great thing about swimming is that it really helps keep you flexible. Swimming with fins stretches out your ankles, especially if you have a "runners" kick. (That's the kick that you go backwards ) Doing flip turns stretches the back and hamstrings, very important if you don't have a good stretching routine after your runs. I notice this when I don't swim for a while, my ankles are sore, my hamstrings tighten to where I can barely touch the ground and I even get cramps in my shins when I start running. A couple weeks in the pool and I feel "lubed" up.

Sorry to hijack the thread. Best yd times:

Hello

I was thinking about my beginner times.

Should the question be

What is your 100meter average over the course of 500 meters or 1000 meters? That would be a more realistic number.

Just my thoughts

Kevin

not sure how it would be more realistic, as the OP asked for peoples 100 times and they answered with them, but here you go, all from open water races/tris.

best:
2000m 26:30 for 1:17 per 100
800m 9:56 for 1:10 per 100
best 100 :59.

no swim background, taught myself to swim 4 years ago when i started tris. still get smoked by the real swimmers.

3:56 400IM? Not saying this is not true but considering Phelp's best time is around 4:07 I guess I am wondering why we didn't see you in the Olympics.

My best standalone 100 free off the wall is 1:04

3:56 is for Short Course Yards. It's still pretty fast though. Olympics is Long Course Meters so the times are slower.

3:56 is *way* beyond "pretty fast" considering the qualifying cut for short course nationals next month is 4:00.99. Since he swam that 15 years ago, I'd call that "really, really, really fast". His 200 fly time is in the same catagory...

Four years ago, on BT, you'd find only 4 or 5 people faster than me in the pool. Now there are 40.

100m short course:
2 years ago: 56.7
Now: probably 1:04

People are getting faster these days.
When I used to swim in high school (8 years ago), breaking 2 minutes in the 200m would let you race with the big boys. Now, little teenagers are breaking that barrier like bread. 1:57 is the minimum now.
