So, now that it's getting cold, what kind of warm up foods do people like?  I try to limit myself to one cup of coffee in the morning, so I haven't been doing that.  Does anybody have any good suggestions for a quick, convenient warm up food or drink?

Thanks,
Greg

I like oats. I cook them in the microwave.

Take a shower and get dressed in warm clothes.  Works well for me.

Ice bath, followed by hot shower if it was a long run and diet moutaindew on ice followed by lots of layers of soft warm clothes, sweats.   There is the traditional treatment for hypothermia, but your spouse may not be willing, depending on how cold you really are.

Hot tub baby!  I get a large ice water and relax in the 101 degree hot tub.  Sorry, no help I know!

I too enjoy the hot tub, however I try to avoid it after workouts, especially a run. While it may warm you up after a cold workout it is exactly the opposite of what the muscles and joints need after a hard workout. Have I jumped in the hot tub after a particularly cold workout? You bet, and I will again.

The best bet though is to just get some food in your body and get some warm, dry clothes on.

my coldest run I ever came back from, I was clearly getting hypothermic. I could not w arm up, even with fleece layers and leanign against the radiator. My entire hands were getting numb from Raynaud's Disease. So, I fixed myself hot grits with butter and brown sugar, hot tea, then climbed in the tub with my fleece hat and sweater still on (couldn't bear to take them off).

Within about 30 minutes I was a furnace, baby!

I usually just take a good hot shower, then eat my regular breakfast.

I have run outside  under dressed for the weather though. I did not know it, but  it was -10 outside, just hard long pants, thin gloves and jacket on. I knew it was cold, but did not think it was that cold. When I got back I hd no feeling in my arms from the elbow down. I could not grasp the doorknob to get in the house, had to kick at the bottom to "knock" as I could not make a fist. Coldest I have ever been.

When I did get inside where it was warm, had a short spell of coughing fits, nausea, and when my arms starting warming up, straight pain, not like pins a needles, but straight pain. I would give it a 8 out of 10. It took about 30 mins to get warm again. I went over by the heater and warmed but. I was real careful holding onto the register as my hands were so cold I could not tell I was holding on to it. I would "hold" really lay my hands on the register for 10 seconds or so then take them off for a minute so I would burn them.

When I go on long rides I use Polar insulated bottles and make my drink hot instead of cold...if you drink Gatorade it tastes a little like hot jello.

Hot tea for me -- warms my hands and my core.  Hot shower after I've warmed up.

^^^^^ Yep! A nice cup of hot chocolate made with milk. I figure if chocolate milk is good for recovery, why not HOT chocolate milk?

I generally get really cold after long runs in the winter.  Sometimes the shivering is so bad I have trouble walking.  After a marathon last winter I was starting to go south when my lovely wife handed me a venti hot chocolate from Starbucks.  She is amazing!  Hot chocolate is warm and full of calories.  Problem solved.  Since then I have worked on more calories during the run and I don't get as cold post run.  So my final answer is hot chocolate, but you might need more calories while you are out there.

Wow, some of you guys live in colder places than me.  Anyway, I was kind of looking for something that would be good for recovery and renourishment in addition to warming up from the inside out.  I like the oatmeal idea since you can pop it in the microwave for about a minute or two and be ready to eat.  There are tons of things that can be added to it as well.  I like the hot chocolate made from milk too.  You could make it the same way and get a decent shot of protein at the same time.

I usually take a looooong hot shower afterward, but it takes a while to get the chill out sometimes.  I was trying to come up with something to expedite the process from the inside before I get into the shower.  Thanks for all of the suggestions.  I hadn't thought about putting warm drinks in my water bottles either.  Great idea.

Greg

Soup is another good option.  A bowl of chicken noodle, black bean or lentil soup gets you some protein and carbs and personally I crave salty instead of sweet post workout.

Heehee. Not when you're hypothermic and cant feel your hands! It was FUEL for my furnace. I'll try to limit the application however.

A cup of warm tea always works for me. Most important though is to get out of your cold, sweaty cloths and into something dry and warm. The problem is of course, that although a hot shower feels great, it's not the best for you when you are hypothermic, or close to it... too much of a shock to the system. If you need to warm up quickly, get out of your running gear, and wrap yourself up in a thick blanket (just be certain you're not using this blanket for anything else put post exercise... it will be sweaty after a while...) and make yourself a hot drink. When you core temperature is back up again, shower off.

Okay.  That is cool!  (I love Jello.)

I'm usually an Earl Grey Tea girl - but I'm going to give this a go next time!  I wonder what Accelerade tastes like warm...

Hot Gatorade?  Hot Accelerade?  Urph.....  You people are WAY out there!  I dont like gatorade when it gets too warm in the bottle during summer rides, cannot imagine heating it up.

To warm up at home aftter ride/run, nice double espresso, then shower.

I just make sure I get in the shower before the post-cold-workout chills set in. Sometimes, I will warm up a glass of chocolate milk in the microwave. But I don't have chocolate milk too often.

You said no coffee but i always look forward to my post-run Sunday Starbucks - could be a hot chocolate, a latte or anything warm. But it feels like a treat and is great to walk home with a warm drink knowing i've just run long.  :D
