Hi All,

I am going to buy a new bike this weekend. I don't kow much about bikes so I was hoping you guys could help. What is the difference between a cross bike and a road bike? I am only 5 foot 2, what type of frame should I look for? Thanks for any input you can provide.

A Mountain Bike is a Mountain Bike
A Road Bike is a Road Bike...

A Cross Bike is somewhere in between, which means it is confused and doesn't know what it wants to be.

Buy the bike from a good bike shop and if they have any reputation at all they will fit you to whatever you ride.

OK. Thank you for the input. There is a bike shop having a sale this weekend. I have been there a few times but I don't know their reputation.

Where are you located, someone here might be able to recommend shops based on that.
Also, Where are you going to primarily be riding this bike, road  racing only?  Trails?
A lot of what we might recommend here could be based on that.

I live in Tucson Arizona. The bike will be used for roads mostly. I have never tried moutain biking. The bike I have now is a piece of crap. I don't plan on doing Ironman distances but I need something reliable. Thanks again for the help.

If you're going to be riding on mostly paved surfaces I'd suggest that you get a road bike.

Are you talking about Cyclocross when you speak of a cross bike.

If so. The frame geometry of a cyclocross bike looks exacltly like a road bike (in fact most cyclocross bikes are just modified road bikes), but the fork and suspension have been beefed up for cyclocross, which is done on a whole host of terrains.

http://www.cyclocrossworld.com/

Also the tires are a bit fatter than regular road tires, (though smaller than MTB tires).

If you are looking for a bike for a Tri I would stick with a Road bike.

The difference is that you won't be frustrated with a road bike in a year.

Don't buy a cross bike or hybrid if you plan on doing any racing at all. They are intended to be ridden on bike paths and for commuting. They will feel good in the store, but in the long run the design compromises will become an excuse to finally buy a road bike after all.

I would not reccommend a tri-bike as an only bike (or even as a first bike). They're too specific a tool. A road bike can be successfully pressed into service for tri's, but for many types of riding a tri bike will be a liability (fast group rides with pacelines involved for example)

The main thing is to get a bike that fits.

trifan76 - 2005-06-03 11:44 AM I live in Tucson Arizona.

I know Supergo is having a big sale this weekend, if that's where you're going.

Just curious, but are you a member of the Tucson Tri Girls?  We may have met, if so.

Anyways, if you get a new bike, enjoy!

Hi Pirate,

I am not a member of Tucson Tri Girls. I don't think we have met because I have never done a local event. The only Tri I have ever done is the Reebok Women's series in San Diego last October. The store I was looking to go to is called Performance Cycle at Broadway and Kolb. They have a wide variety of bikes there but since I don't know much about bikes I wasn't sure what I should be looking for. Thanks for all your help and I really enjoyed you photos on the album page.

Hi Pirate, I am not a member of Tucson Tri Girls.

Well then...check into joining!    It's a great club, with lots of clinics, workshops, training workouts, etc.  They have a ton of sponsorship, so as a member you get a bunch of discounts for tri, fitness, coaching, and nutritional places around town.  When you sign up you get a lot of stuff like a T-shirt, 10 packets of Carb-boom gel, and some discount coupons (Gwozdzilla is the membership coordinator and can probably tell you more than I can).  They have select races each year and give out $10 off registration coupons to members that are doing the races.  Anyways, I've had a lot of fun ever since I joined last October, so I highly recommend them!

Just to clarify, as Rower pointed out, a "cross" bike is NOT a hybrid. A cross bike is designed for cyclocross racing, and they make for a great foul weather/winter road bike. At first glance they look like a road bike. They have a similar frame and usually are outfitted with drop bars. The differences will be a higher BB clearance, center-pull brakes, mountain bike gearing, and fatter tires. Also the front fork will be aluminum or steel, not carbon. Of course the tires can be replaced with road tires.

That said, unless you plan on racing cyclocross (a lot of fun, especially for those who like to find out just how far over their lactate threshold they can go while getting as muddy as possible), or live on a dirt road, I would go with a road bike.

I would definitely not choose a hybrid.

That performance store is a nationwide chain. I got my roadbike from a Virginia location and have had nothing but good service here. I can't speak for your store of course, but they are great here.

Cyclocross racing is A TON of fun!  We have a little series down here in Tucson in the winter ('03 AZ Women's B CX state champ here ).  I also ride my CX bike on some of the mountain bike trails here.  People tend to look at you funny because they think you're on a road bike...until you fly down the downhills.

very cool! I love the reindeer shot jumping the barrier. Cross racing is pretty big in Oregon. We hosted the national championships the last two years.

Thanks!  Each race I decorated my helmet and bike.  This was right around Christmas, hence the reindeer antlers.  Then I told a bunch of people that cyclocross makes you horny.

Rudy had the best costume, though.

The one of me in the reindeer antlers is at Reid Park.  The one with Rudy in the tutu is at Himmel Park.  They have about 4-5 races each winter, and each one is at a different city park.
