Subject: New too Tris, need help
Hi yall, I'm 26 and just now trying to get into triathlons. I use to be a college baseball player and due to years of that, I have bad knees and am also very bulky. Before I get started, should I first try to loose some of my bulkyness or should I try and focuss my training using my background as a weighlifter to help my endurence and strength.

You should just get out there and swim, bike, and run. Your body will adjust as it sees fit (no pun intended). Either the muscle you have currently will be sufficient and you'll maintain, or it'll be unnecessary - and you'll lose it, or not enough, and you'll gain it.

Start out slowly, short distances, lots of recovery. Don't ramp up more than 10% per week, have fun, ask lots of questions, and find a masters' group to swim with.

I'd say get rid of the bulkiness. A lot of triathloning is about weight-to-strength ratio, the more useless bulk you have to carry around, the less efficient you are. By useless bulk I'm talking about muscle that doesn't directly contribute to your propulsion, as well as fat.

Also agree that if you just get out there and swim, bike, run your body will start to relieve itself of the unnecessary.

I don't know about you, but I've never been very successful with trying to lose weight. 

There are lots of us here on BT who are overweight.  Yup, our excess bulk slows us down, but you'll find that as you swim, bike, run, you'll get in better shape and probably drop bulk.  Don't wait for the body of a triathlete- make it happen!
