Subject: Home-made lock laces?
I saw before someone posted that they had success using home-made "lock-laces" for easy on-off of sneakers.

Some recommended items were from REI:
- Black/white shock cord 7/64" Diameter 0.10
Hi-Tex Corp Mini Cord-Locks Four-Pack $2.25

Basically some elastic cord and some cord-locks. Any tricks to make it work without being unwieldy or flopping around?

Would love to try it.

True - but I may put these on no less than 4 separate pairs of sneakers, and even upgrade a GF's 3-4 pairs, so we're talking $56+ dollars, if not $60 after tax. Plus, if I can just buy cheap cord for more pairs in the future, it's well worth the minor incovenience to me.

Have you tried lacing your shoes really loose?  I went to this a couple years ago, and I haven't had any problem running all sorts of distances.

btw, I'm not trying to be a jerk.  It just works for me and a couple friends I've suggested it to.

Why do you put them on so many? I only put them on the sneaks i'm going to race in. I don't care if I have to take 20 seconds to tie & double knot a lace for a training run.

That's the method I currently use for races. It works - I posted the 3rd fastest T2 time in my last Oly (out of 80 AG competitors) thanks to the no-laceup method. I actually want to put lace lock-wannabes on my sneaks because I work out in a pretty unclean Ballys with a functional pool but a really gross and very crowded/small locker room, and I've been doing a lot of swim/bike swim/run bricks, and I really hate having to mess with the knots in that locker room. (I ride my bike to the gym, so I can't just bring them untied.)Call me lazy!

I've done this. Lots cheaper than buying commercial lock laces. Go to a fabric store and buy the plastic lock barrels. They come in either black or white. Can't remember, but I think you get 4-6 pairs per pack. I tried, but could not find the thinner elastic cord at the fabric stores. I eventually found what I needed at a Marine/Boating supply store. You might also find it at an outdoor shop by the camping and backpacking supplies. You can buy the elastic lace in bulk for very cheap. You will be limited in color though. If you want to go with different colors, try eBay, you can buy several sets pretty cheaply there. I found that in the local running/triathlon stores, you are going to pay approx, $10, on eBay around $5 (with shipping) and you can make them your self for just under $3.
