Subject: Garmin 305 cycling distance with GPS off?

This may be a dumb question with an easyanswer, but I couldn't find the answer readily in the Garmin manual or on theweb.I'm trying to get my Garmin 305 + cadence sensor to keep track of distance, but not with GPS.

I'm using it on a trainer, and I want theGarmin to use the tire revolutions to calculate distance traveled on myCycleOps2 trainer.I've turned the GPS to "Off", and I turned thecadence sensor on, which works great. I've also programmed in the correct wheelsize. But it still gives me ridiculous distance values, like 3 miles total fora 90 minute hard trainer ride.

Can anyone help?

(PS - I know that somebody will recommend tojust keep track of time and ignore the total distance traveled, but I want thedistance traveled to compare trainer workouts on different days, especiallywhen I do LT testing and want to gauge my performance.)

Depends on where you placed the sensor devices on the frame and spoke.  Have you put in a new battery, too, in the sensor?  Have you reset the sensor and recalibrated?  Read the manual on that.

I have the 305 and sensor, and had my LBS set it up when I purchased my bike 3 years ago.  I have replaced the battery once.  I use the setup when I bike indoors and haven't had any issues.

Check the sensor arm on the wheel side.  It should be really close, as in a few mm.  When you check it, push the little button on the sensor and move the wheel back and forth so the magnet passes the plane of the arm.  It will light up whenever it picks up the magnet.  Get it just close enough to light every time.

I've had the sensor on three bikes over the last two years and haven't had any issues once properly set up.

Can anybody vouch for the sensor being accurate and waterproof for outside riding?  I just purchased the cadence sensor and the only negative reviews were that some sensors were replaced after getting damped and that most shipped with a dead battery.

I've had mine through a couple of monsoons with no ill effects and have yet to change the batteries in either one.  Some were probably on the shelf longer than others.

Check that the wheel circumference is set correctly in your computer - it should just be the default for a road/tri bike unless you're running a 650 wheel.  I have no issues with the distance it records on the trainer.

As for the other question about the cadence sensor and the rani - no issues to date.  2 Years and counting.

Mine has been through some rains with no ill-effects.

So let me get this straight -

The Garmin 305 should automatically do distance based on wheel size as long as the cadence sensor is being sensed?

(Again, the cadence sensor works great - it gives accurate readings of my cadence, but the distance doesn't work even though it's set on non-GPS mode.

The sensor has to pick up readings from both the magnets, the one on the crank arm (cadence) and the one on the wheel (speed/distance). Perhaps the sensor is not properly placed with respect to the wheel magnet?

Edit: per Garmin, the green LED on the sensor unit should blink every time the spoke magnet passes the sensor arm.

Another question: have you ridden outside with the GPS turned on since installing the GSC10 sensor unit?  (might need to do this for proper calibration)

NO.  The cadence sensor is the outside sensor which gets its information from the magnet that you put on the crank arm near your pedal location.  The speed sensor is the little black arm that can be adjusted to match the magnet that you attached to your spoke.  Once you have this set properly you will get the proper distance, as long as you have the proper wheel size selected.  I have run into this before and it was because something hit the sensor, or moved the magnet on the spoke so they were not communicating.  I think it was my kids moving my bike and the sensor was bumped.  It only took a few seconds to figure it out and adjust the sensor to match.

And yes, this is very water proof and can be used in the rain.  Or at least that has worked for me.  You will see how tight it is sealed when you change the battery in a year.

I used to have the 305, but upgraded to the 310 with the cadence sensor.  Does your 305 recognize or "detect" the cadence sensor when you are start riding?  I can't remember if my 305 did the same as well or not, but my 310 will alert you that it has detected the cadence sensor when you start pedaling.

I have had no issues with my cadence sensor getting wet either.

I've been doing hard trainer workouts and it's usually reading just 12 mph, etc - although cadence is right.  For my setup I think the resistance on the trainer slows the rotation of the wheel..

And it doesn't matter where the magent is on the wheel as long as it's detected by the sensor.  Think about it.....a rotation is a rotation!  Cool

Cool

Your big ring front and 5th gear rear should be very close to the same thing on the road as on the trainer at the same cadence.  Resistance of the trainer would just mean more force you would have on the crank arms to get the same cadence with the same gearing.

Subject: Garmin 305 cycling distance- questions
seen the other posts on this thread and I have a related topic...

I train indoors and outdoors and just got my Gramin GSC10. Indoors I have the GPS swithed off and the Calibartion on manual.

Question 1 - When I am on the road and GPS = ON, do I also need to set the Calibration to Auto - or not worry and let Garmin workout speed/pace/distance thru the GPS? I don't want to have to muck around with heaps of settings

Question 2 - I have a TACX wind trainer and when I was using this alone - my high cadance sets measured well. With the garmin - I find I can be pumping hard and just get to my 120 rpm cadance...

Apprecaite any feedback

Once my speed/cadence sensor was set up, it spent about 2 minutes calibrating the first time I rode outside.  After that I haven't messed with it and I switch from biking inside on the trainer, outside and running daily.  Once you get it set it should work fine.

Not sure what you mean by the second question...

Mate..not to worry about the second question. With the first one:

- I have just set-up with the indoor trainer - set the GPS off, set the calibration to manual and set the wheel size as required.

My question is - when I take it on the road tomorrow - I will turn the GPS ON, but do I also need to set the calibarion back to AUTO? I would have thought not as the Garmin has a GPS to work out speed & distance...

Sorry if this a dump question....

I checked my 305 just to be sure.  I leave the GPS on at all times, even on the trainer.  The system seems to figure out what I'm doing without messing with the settings.

Edit:  I can't seem to find the calibration screen on my 305, but I'm thinking you'd want to set it back to auto.

Thanks..just turned to my bike..turn the calibration back on and I can still see pace registering on the watch..I think I fixed..just need to turn the GPS o when I haed back out in the morning...

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly!

I've had my Edge 305 for almost 3yrs with no problems, inc. driving rains during much of a 160mi ride.
BTW- The sensor battery continues to drain when the cadence (crank arm) magnet is near the sensor.  I was told to never leave the crank arm over the sensor when storing the bike to help preserve that battery.
