Sunny
Total Time = 1h 31m 10s
Overall Rank = 130/220
Age Group = 25-29
Age Group Rank = 7/17
Pre-race routine:

Woke up early (after waking up at 2:30 to a broken air conditioner and insane humidity and heat), packed up the car with my stuff and trixie's, grabed a coffee and headed off for what we thought would be a 1 1/4 hour drive, that ended up taking 45 minutes. Needless to say, we were early.

Got to the site, signed in, set up, and found Rick, Charles, Gary and Greg and chatted. Got the bike "fixed" (the brake was rubbing because I put the tire on backwards - yes, I be a smart one :) ), warmed up for a few, took in a bunch of liquid, got the wetsuit on and walked down to the lake for the wave start.
Event warmup:

Short spin on the bike. It was hot and sticky, so didn't want to do too much.
Swim
  • 10m 51s
  • 500 yards
  • 02m 10s / 100 yards
Comments:

Swim was pretty easy and relaxed. Probably the most relaxed I have ever been in a race. Got banged around a bit, but nothing major
What would you do differently?:

figure out how to stay cooler before the swim start. The 45 min or so I had to wait for my wave to start were brutal with the heat.
Transition 1
  • 02m 52s
Comments:

Its getting faster, so I think that's something
Bike
  • 44m 16s
  • 20 kms
  • 27.11 km/hr
Comments:

need to do more biking and get faster gosh darn-it. On the bright side, I did actually pass a few people on the bike ride. That was a first. However, MANY more people passed me than I passed them. I know I could have gone faster, not by much but certainly by 1 mph.
What would you do differently?:

Spend more time on the bike leading up to it.
Transition 2
  • 01m 59s
Comments:

need a second pair of orthotics if I am ever going to cut down time on this transition.
Run
  • 31m 30s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 10m 10s  min/mile
Comments:

I started to get chilled half way through the run. I knew it was the beginning of heat exhaustion, so I backed off the pace, walked one hill and two aid stations, and just made sure that I finished standing up.
What would you do differently?:

If it was 10 degrees cooler, I would have run faster. Need to spend some time doing brick work.
Post race
Warm down:

Find Trixie, walked around, ate a bunch of watermelon and drank a ton, and waited for the rest of the mafia to make it in so I could take picutres of them.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

the heat and some limits to training time over the last few weeks.

Event comments:

After the race I BBQed with the rest of the Michigan Mafia. We exchanged war stories, cheered trixie as she fought for her rightful place in the medals for the duathlon. Trixie busted out a cake for charles and dwayne cooked up some serious burgers.

I plan to post pics tomorrow, so stay tuned.

Hey, I learned something. I also got chilled partway through the run (my skin got all goosefleshy, and I even shivered). I didn't know what it meant, now I have a better idea.

You had a great race. Was nice to meet up with you.too.
