I know there is a risk of them being stolen.

Really? Would you ever consider stealing someones old running shoes, ever, let alone during a race??

Thanks and good news.  I "aged up" so I have an early wave (likely a little after 6 AM).  Past two years I have been in the red transition area and I rember my feet bothering my on that shorter run.  Current will be stronger later but I will take the earlier start instead of sitting for 2 hrs any day of the week.  The pros have typically been done before I have even been in the water.

I am coming from CO - I just assumed there is risk.  Although this being my 3rd year doing the race I should know that there are a lot of people in the area so the chances are slim.  If someone is that needy that they want to take my shoes with all those people around - they likely need them a lot more than I do for my 1/4 run. It's my 3rd yr doing this race as well...I'm going to try to catch a cab to T1 after the swim : ).
I age up out of M40-44 next year - too bad, I love the 6am-ish start.

i wasn't planning on having shoes at the end of the swim to get to yellow... is that okay?

what time do you all plan on getting there in the morning?
will you go set up your gear in transition in the morning? or do it when you drop off your bike the night before?

i figure i will set up gear in morning... but if i plan to get there at 5?   transition closes at 5:45..
just curious what time everyone else is planning to show up?

I'll probably get there as soon as transition opens and set up then. I like the pre-race atmosphere and I don't mind hanging around before the race.

The RD always asks people not to leave shoes outside the swim exit, and always threatens to move them or throw them away if they start getting in the way. I've run the to the Yellow transition area (which is further away) barefoot and it's no big deal. It's asphalt and they'll sweep it clear of gravel or glass or whatever. I don't think it'd be worth the hassle to leave shoes by the exit.

I'm in the male 24 and under wave, the last wave to go.  I'm not to excited about that but it will be interesting to see if i can catch my uncle who goes out almost 30 min before me.

its ok if you dont have shoes, flips or something else for the run back to yellow transition..

5 am sounds about right..

I will set up my gear in the morning.. squirrels like our nutrition..

5ish i think is pretty good.. it takes about 20 mins to set up.. and another 20 to get over to swim start.. and bang - time to go !

FYI, if anyone needs any last minute nutrition, accessories, etc or just want to check out the one-and-only, new-and-improved Tri shop in NYC and our unique shop design, we are at 203 W 58th between 7th & Broadway right near the Park and a few blocks from the Expo.

Though some of us are racing, there will be plenty of reinforcements to get people in-and-out with whatever you need in 5 min or less with our Express Checkout (you can time us- we have experience with this). You can also place your order on SBRshop.com, choose In Store Pickup and avoid the lines. The extended hours for the weekend will be 9a-9p Thurs-Sat and Sun 10-6.

As always, bring in your race number and receive a 10% discount on your entire purchase.

Also, feel free to bother us even if you're just looking for local info, directions, advice, race tips, watering holes/grub recommendations, etc. at [email protected], 212.399.3999 or www.sbrshop.com

Good luck and see you out there- always cool to meet BTers!

NYC is without a doubt the biggest logistical pain in the rear in the sport, but I love doing this race every year. I am sooo fired up for Sunday!

@jmk-brooklyn,

No, keeping things at Home Base to keep things smooth logistically and so all of our people are at the same location; no transfers, etc. Also, this way our customers get to see the Shop, bikes are there, use the Endless Pool for wetsuits, servicework, etc, etc.

Should be a good time. 'Just hope the weather, sea vermin, logistics and all cooperate.

AHHH!  A few more days!  My anxiety is slowly turning into excitement.  I'm sure it'll switch back over to anxiety as soon as I start sucking wind during the swim!  This is my 4th tri and first time racing the NYC.  This is going to be an experience I'll never forget.

Have you tried emailing the RD's? Maybe they've gotten an email from a desperate athlete whose accomodations fell through at the last minute.

Craigslist?

As much as I love Craigslist - you have to be very careful. If you find someone, make sure the hotel charges them and not you. If they can't change it, I think Paypal may be the safest option to get paid. Do not accept checks, money orders, etc. Unfortunately, the scams that are being pulled on Craigslist get better and better. You may be better off eating the charges rather than risking additional problems thru a scam.
Good Luck.

I am not racing this year, but am volunteering at the bike in/out and want to wish everyone competing a good race.  With the guaranteed spot from volunteering, and a lot of training, I'll hopefully be out there with you all next year.

Transistion is set up and the swim start and exit are in the water. The swim looks really long and so does the exit to yellow transition!! I didn't see any jelly fish but the water was pretty murky and I couldn't see anything except some garbage on the surface of the water. yuck!

Let's hope all goes well the next few days and we have a good race on Sunday!

There is a pool at the JCC on Amsterdam and 75th. They may allow you to buy a day pass. other option is the Equinox at 59th st/ Columbus Circle but they may be harder to get into. Lastly there is a Reebok gym on 67th and columbus, apparantly they have a wonderful pool but is the most expensive of the 3 I mentioned. good luck!

New York Health and Raquet Club (NYHRC) on 57th St. (between Park and Lexington) has a 25 yard pool on the roof of the building.  (I used to work at 59th and Park)

I've never used the pool, but they may have a day rate and it is a short cab ride through the park.  (I'd call first to insure).

Otherwise, go to SBR and tell them you want to try a new wetsuit.  Use their swim machine.  :-(but that may not work at they seem to be following this thread)

Also, if you are staying at a hotel, talk to the concierage, they should be able to get you in to a pool somewhere.

Worst case scenario, go jump in the Hudson.

other option is to call Asphalt Green - they have a 50 meter pool and I hear they are very swimmer friendly.
