So I did a brick this weekend. 20 miles-3 miles. Second one of this distance, and the first one went perfectly. This one ... a quarter-mile off the bike, and I ran into one of the worst side stitches I've ever had. I tried to alter my breathing, stretch, everything I could to run through it, but it did nothing but intensify until I was close to crying from the pain. Then I remembered something one of my coworkers told me that one of HER friends had told her: a sure cure for a stitch is to do a somersault.

I ground to a halt, holding my side, and spent what felt like a ridiculous amount of time trying to decide whether to try to somersault on the sidewalk or on the dirt next to it (I so sweaty and in my tri suit I thought the dirt would bother me the rest of the run), though was only a few seconds. Then it took me a couple more seconds to really remember how to do a damn somersault. I don't think I've done one since I was around 7!. I put my head on the ground and thought, "I'm going to freaking injure myself doing a somersault after 5 months of injury-free training!" I rolled over, got to my feet, and the stitch was completely gone. I trotted away for the 3 miles without another twinge.

I really don't think I stopped running long enough for it to go away on its own, so I'm pretty damn convinced the somersault worked--I just hope I don't have to use it again!

So is this some kind of practical joke to see how many of us are gullible enough to do actual somersaults at our age?  While sweaty and in pain and IN PUBLIC, no less?  Can you imagine what any casual observer would think watching this?  They'd probably be looking around for the hidden cameras.

Seriously though, I have never heard of this...I am quite intrigued at the logic behind it.

That sounds just crazy enough to work!  I seem to be plagued with the dreaded side-stitch. I'm very open minded when it comes to remedies, so next time I get a stitch,  I will give the somersaut a try.  Thanks for the insight, and I will update you to let you know if it works.

Will you also update us and let us know if you end up in traction?  I have no idea if I would even be capable of doing a somersault at the advanced age of 41.  Maybe I should try one tonight!

Very interesting! I get stitches too and they drive me crazy. I saw you mentioned this in your blog a few days ago and didn't know whether you really meant you did an actual somersault!

You've got to start training w/ someone who carries a camera. I would love to see this!!

I can just hear your neighbors talking amongst themselves now...

Neighbor1: Yeah, I saw Bryan out running the other day and he stops, does a somersault and then starts running again.

Neighbor2: He's a triathlete... they all do that to practice flip turns for their swim.

I wonder if it's kind of like the hiccup remedies...just something crazy enough to get your mind off of it for long enough to relax you.  Or maybe perhaps it crunches you up and stretches you out enough to relieve the stitch.  We may never know...

I don't own a kilt, but if I did, I would be crazy enough to wear it to a race. This includes doing somersaults during a race!!  I would probably be the most popular guy with the chicks, too.  True Scotsman do not wear anything under their kilts, hence the sporan. Oh, yes, I have been in enough pain from a side stitch, that I almost quit.  The key word here is almost.  So I would probably do a somersault if I thought it would work.  I'm that crazy!  For the ladies- do you want to see some pics of me in a kilt?

Sure, how about mid-somersault.

Btw, how the hell do you include the body of the message you are replying to in your own text?

I would post some pics like that, but I think the forum rules say something like NO PORNOGRAPHY!  Plus I don't want to leave you women all hot and bothered.

That sounds like some prescripton medicine, the side effects may be worst than the illness itself...
Yeah you'll be cured of side stiches but you may get your neck broken... LOL LOL LOL

No kidding! I was paralyzed with fear that I would break my neck doing it. I once also cured a stitch by hopping off the treadmill, dropping on the floor, and popping out some crunches. But this time I was in so much pain I couldn't stand the thought of doing crunches. Or maybe it was oxygen deprivation from the first part of my brick ...

I can see the race report now,  During the run I tripped over some guy/girl doing a somersault in the middle of the race!! Funny thing is I get these on a lot of T2's. Come of the bike, start running and bam, it hits.  I (for one) will be trying this next time it hits.

Thanks for the advice, since there doesnt seem to be much info out there.
