Subject: Injured shoulder exercises
Living in Steamboat Springs has its perks but walking on ice isn't one of them.  After an early morning swim after Thanksgiving I slipped on the ice and went down hard.  My shoulder hasn't healed or stopped hurting.  Needless to say my knee has been hurt this whole time as well and I haven't been able to run.  Still fighting shin splints and getting acupuncture on my shin and shoulder.  Hard to believe one accident can be so detrimental.  Does anyone have any exercises I can do that won't be hard on my shoulder or knee/shin that might help my recovery?

First off, it is probably prudent to visit with a doctor.

When I injured my shoulders, here are the exercises I was given:

Overhead shoulder press with dumbells.

This one can be done with rubber bands (the big physical therapy kind, btw :-)), a dumbbell while laying on your side, or a cable machine at the gym.  I use the cable machine at the gym.  You are after reps, not effort.  Keep the weight low!!  Bend your arm at the elbow.  The cable should be at the same height as your elbow.  Pull the cable across your body.  Do 3 sets of 10.  Alternate with your arm bent at the elbow, but hand is pointing away from your torso.  You are pulling the cable towards your center.  I hope this makes sense.

Another exercise:  grip a towel and drop it down your back.  Grab the bottom of the towel with your other hand.  Alternate pulling down and pulling up.

And the last one: sit in a chair.  Grab the seat of the chair.  Lean away from that hand.  Do a couple sets of 10 reps.

If you are resistant to go to the doctor, please pay attention to this:  If it hurts during the rep, but pain goes away when you stop, you are PROBABLY OK.  If it continues to hurt even when you stop, see a doctor.

Good luck with a speedy recovery.

Go to a PT to get some exercises and to make sure you are doing them correctly.

I am sure accupunture and other forms of alternative medicine have their places (or not), but I would see an orthopedist and then a physical therapist if I have been in pain from a fall 6 weeks ago!

My acupuncturist is a M.D.  He is also a triathlete.  Talk about getting all the eggs in one basket.

I was out in Steamboat in early December. While riding down Rudy's Run I took a fall dislocated my shoulder and fractured my arm. Still on the recovery but I must say that was the best ER that I have ever gone into!. I almost felt more at home their then I do when I visit my parents. Ironically on our last day intown my buddy almost slipped on the sidewalk and who knows what would have happened.
