Subject: Replacing Bike Shoes

This may be a dumb question, but . . . do bike shoes wear out?  Like the insoles and stuff?  Should they be replaced like running shoes?  What is the average lifespan of bike shoes?

Just curious.  Mine are about a year old and I'm noticing more 'irritation' on the balls of my feet when I ride - soreness, really.  Not sure what to make of it.  My shoes are pretty cheap as are my pedals & clips - very entry level.

Any insights would be appreciated.

What type pedals are you using?  I have "hot spots" on the balls of my feet from the pressure and use SPDs.  Just about every experienced cyclist in my club told me to switch to something with a wider pedal (Look style, basically).  I will as soon as it becomes economically agreeable.

My pedals are spd's - been told to get rid of them by lots of people.  Just not sure what the life of a shoe should be.

SPD's are just fine.  With a decently stiff soled shoe, you're not going to feel the cleat at all and hotspots shouldn't be an issue.

The insoles in shoes can compress and wear out.   You can pick up some new ones at the drug store.

Shoes themselves can wear out over time, too, but a year seems short - especially for road shoes.  The velcro and closure mechanisms can wear out, the soles can delaminate, etc.
