meherczeg - 2010-01-19 5:20 PM just doing the math, you're asking for a coach to give you one-on-one constant training for 22 months (you said 2011 Kona, right) for $1800...that breaks down to less than $20/week...how much time do you think someone will spend analyzing your power tap, HRM data, workout progression for that price tag?

Does that really even matter?  The reality, as others have said, is that the OP won't KQ in 2011 on 10 hours a week, and I'd venture to say even on more than that.  The offer could be $50,000, but come 2011, the coach ends up with $0.

I think it's great to have goals... but they need to be realistic.

Best of luck to the OP with things... I'm sure you'll get a lot faster over the coming years, and hopefully someday you'll KQ.

some random thoughts:

1. Based on your race performances (i.e. RI 70.3) it seems unrealistic for me to think you can be a solid KQ by 2011. If I was you I would set the goal of becoming as fast as you can for a HIM for 2010 and based on the result set your 2011. It doesn't mean you shouldn't think about KQ, I think you should but 2011 seems to soon.
2. Some people can KQ with 10 hrs of training for sure (Mike Caiazzo one of our athletes did on his 1st IM) but he also has won races overall, done sub 4hrs HIM and ran sub 2:30hr marathon. In your case, your past performances don't seem to indicate you could achieve that goal given your time frame and desired training load.
3. What happens if you don't KQ for whatever reason (poor pacing, bad nutrition, mechanical, bad day, studs showing up, lack of training), the coach won't get anything in return for 20+ months of coaching?
4. Any coach should be able to provide you with a personilized training plan, constant feedback, communication, training load management through either RPE, HRM, power and/or GPS, tips, nutritional advice, etc, if they don't there are not that much of a coach to begin with.
5. I don't think any coach can ensure you will qualify without knowing your athletic capabilities in detail, that takes quite some time.
6. I don't know how appealing a trip to Hawaii would be for a coach. I would be more incline to consider a trade in services or something that could provide a direct benefit beyond a trip that I could get with ease with my own traveling miles.

Maybe you should post this on other boards or email coaches directly. Good luck with your search and goals.

^^Well outlined, Jorge. Like I said, if you are fast, you are fast from the get go. Otherwise, it's a TON of work. 10 hours isn't a ton of work to overcome the fact that you are not fast, especially in the time frame you are talking. Also, Aaron, keep in mind there are guys here on BT who are fast and train their butts off and still haven't made it. Your comments are a bit of hubris if you think you can just blow by them in 18 months on 10 hours per week. Think about it, it sounds almost insulting.

Don't post this on any other boards. It would be bad.

Really, unless you're a old fart like Bryan you need to be sub 4:20 in a half( or 4:30 on a pretty hard course) and a low low 2 hour guy in an olympic or 9:30 for most fulls. It's gonna take a sub 4:20 at buffalo springs 70.3 to get the kona slot this year I bet for the 25-29 AG for example. It's not a particular fast course either.

You should know if you can get there in a year or so or not.

Us young people also get less spots, and the top guys in our AG are a lot of the time the fastest guys in the race. The talent may die down after the top 5-10 spots pretty quickly compared to 40-44, but that doesn't matter much for a kona slot.

The young AG's aren't the fastest guys in my races hotshot! Let's see...3 guy 25-29 went sub 9:30 in 25-29, 4 in 30-34, 8 in 35-39 and 8 in 40-44 at this years IMAZ. IM is an older mans game, and regardless of # of slots, I still finish at the top. Doesn't sound like the younger guys are finsihing at the top so much, does it?

When you get to the pointy end of IM, it does tend to skew younger.

Yea, the older AG are certainly deeper, so you have a better chance of getting lucky in the younger brackets. Quite a bit of the time though the top 3 in the 20-29 AGs are the very, very top guys. Then the times drop off much faster after that compared to the other AGs.

Ok your base in swimming is shakey.. but if you can get a decent base then you can afford 4 hours a week swimming.  that wont net you any reduced time but will keep your base solid
and u will be fresh on the run

1 interval session (2 hr)
1 distance session + kicks (2hr)

Id do 1 run after the distance session ( including leg kicks )   this gives you heavy leg feeling.

So 1 session would be... 2 hr swim + 2 - 2 1/2 hr run. so thats 4 1/2hr in 1 day.

1 interval bike session.. 2 hr long.
and one 3 hr bike ride..

so were at 2 swims 2 bikes 1 run

final workout would be a 6 mile run followed by a 40-60 mi bike then finish with a 6-10 mi run.

obviously this is a bit over your time of 10 hrs a week but this would progressively increase your stamina and give the most out of your short time limit.  Email me ill give you more tips.

the final time tally would be.. about 14 hours... this workout is basically 2 swim 3 bikes (but could be 2 bikes with one of them being a 6 run 60 ride 10 run brick)  up to you.

leme know ..  my race results are non existant in ironman but i train for the distance and will make my debut when i feel im ready to put out a very competitive time

hahaha.

I've actually only done 3 of them, one ended horribly, one was wildly hilly, and the ofre was rolling (2:05)

but i figure with you racing long course as a focus and me doing sprints, could be a fun race. that and smileford could show up and sport the cow costume to round out the day

Doesn't the Gold plan on here get you some pretty sweet coaching for pocket change (well, pocket change in the coaching world, anyway)? How about going that route?
