Subject: How can improve/boost my immune system?
Keen to train for my first Triathlon in April, I wondered whether I should exercise with a cold.

I started the year with a cold which finally went about 10 days ago so I went spinning and swimming a couple of times last week.

Sadly my cold is back!! Can anyone recommend something to help boost/improve my immune system that seems to have deteriorated in the past few winters.

My diet is balanced and health, I drink alcohol once or twice a week at most and usually don't exceed about 10 units in that week.

I work in a preschool so I feel like my immune system gets a good workout

I use Emergen-C all winter. I like the flavor, it's an energy boost too. I just take one packet per day. You could also add a multi -vitamin if you feel like your diet is lacking.

The other things that help are getting enough sleep, washing your hands, good nutrition and a lot of luck! most of the viruses I pick up are just from being around sick people.

Pre-school I can relate to that.

My immune system has taken a nose-dive since the arrival of my daughter.  She's 3 and whatever she brings home from nursery I/my wife get too :-((

As for nutrition, sleep, washing hands, I'm good on all those.  But thx for the other tips.

I too am a teacher of young kids, so I am assaulted with germs on a daily basis.  I am a big fan of Airbourne and I also have zinc lozenges whenever my throat feels a bit raw.  I drink a lot of water and make sure to get enough rest.  Being tired and dragged out it is best way to get sick.

+1 to Airborne...  I typically get 1 - 2 colds per winter, but I've been 100% healthy this past year while using Airborne religiously (even if I just think it does). Wink

Extra Zinc and some form of Echinacea until the weather gets warmer.

Oh, and some early nights.

My doctor makes me take Coconut oil. It's really good for the immune system. Some people fear the high fat content, but it's supposed to be okay for you if you are healthy to begin with. You can get the concentrated oil at a place like GNC or a health food store.

Besides that, are you sure you are getting enough protein? I seem to dip in energy and feel sickly when I'm not eating enough protein.

Nothing helps short of a good diet and rest/stress reduction.  Lots of expensive placebos though.

I second the D3 recommendation. Everyone is low now in the winter, even down here in the sunny South. It's cheap, safe, and it works. Vitamin D is part of a complex hormonal system, not a vitamin, like doctors were taught in school 10+years ago. There's a lot of research out there. Just google it. Here are a couple of articles:
