Just wondering how cold it has to be before you wear tights...

I guess I was a little surprised to see everyone besides myself wearing tights on my ride yestarday here in Vegas.  It was mid 40's....

Maybe Vegas people have gotten a little soft when it comes to cold temps?  Either that, or need and excuse to wear winter gear and mid 40's is about as cold as it's going to get.

Under 50 degrees, I wear tights, but I'm a wimp when it comes to cold weather. It was 53 degrees on my ride this morning with gust up to 20 mph and I was comfortable in shorts. (The only reason I wore shorts is because I couldn't find my tights.)

If it's not likely to climb out of the mid-40's during a ride, I'll wear them.  If it's going to be a while before temps climb a bit (early start for instance) I'll wear them and just take them off when I get too warm.  42 or lower and I'm in them for sure.

If it's under 60 I usually ride in them depending on length of ride and if it is sunny/cloudy/windy.

I have multiple pairs of tights some are lighter that are just like bike shorts but long. I may put on a pair of leg warmers and take them off it warms up.

as a fellow Vegasian (whatever you call us) - I also wore tights yesterday as well. I rather feel COMFORTABLE and warm in my legs than anywhere else. I think if it hits high 60's, I'll ditch them. They're my ski tights, so they're breathable, but warm. I just find it easier to be cool by just taking off the arm warmers, rolling up base layer shirt (I had to do that once), unzipping my cycling jersey, or even taking off gloves, it cools me down quick. I tend to get cold easily, and I rather be more warm than cold.

Cold knees can cause issues, hence why I try my best to keep my legs warm. If my legs are too cold, my muscles tends to lock up, rending the ride useless!

mid 50s and down. if i am on my mountain bike maybe a bit colder due to the short hard intervals but less wind.

if its in that border line range knee warmers are your friend

Not trying to be billy badass but it has to be around 40 or less for me. I usually layer up top much more than my legs though.

Yeah, I was pretty comfortable in the low 40's with standard shorts.  I think it was in the high 30's at Red Rocks and felt fine (ok, the descents were a little chilly).

As long as my fingers, head, and torso are warm, I'm cool...

I wore shorts last week when it was mid-low 50's and that's about the limit.. and I'm on a MTB so only going about 14-15mph.. going 18-20mph I would definitely do it in the mid 40's.  I'd rather be sweating than too cold.

Anytime under 60.

I was told, a long time ago (1980's), that for your knees sake you should were long tights when cycling in anything under 60.  I don't know if that 'wisdom' still holds up, but with my knees I'm not taking any chances.

this is why knee warmers are awesome, lengthens your shorts basically past your knees, just enough to keep a bit warmer.

Coach John Newsom on www.im-talk.me always says to wear tights or knee-warmers for any temps under 50 degrees F to protect your knees.  I always thought it was just me that got angry IT bands when it was cold, but apparently not!  Warmer knees are happier knees.

If tights are too pricey, running tights, knee-warmers or long-johns over bike shorts will do the trick.

I don't usually wear tights, I wear leg warmers (and sometimes two pairs!). If it is below 5 C (so ~40 F), I will wear 2 pairs of leg warmers and if it is below 16C (~60 F), I will wear 1 pair of leg warmers. Above that, it probably only calls for knee warmers. So I guess the answer is 60 degrees.

I did not wear them on a ride this weekend that was low 50's and missed them. So I'll vote for anything under 60

Maybe I have thick blood, or just a thick skull...

Im in NH and it has to be pretty chilly to get me into tights.  Although they are comfortable.. I would say 40 or below, depending on wind.  I ride in the winter, but not much... if my snot rockets freeze before hitting the pavement, I ll stay inside...

I'd wear them all the time if I could for the sun protection (well okay I could probably find something).  But, if it's 60 or below I would waver.  I would definitely wear them below 50.  40s is when the fleece lined tights come out.

I tend to dress too hot on top and regret it, but don't mind if my legs are warm on a ride.

x2 on the knee warmers.  I use them down to around 45.  Below that it's tights.  But most of my winter riding is still indoors. Frown

Yeah, my knees get "cranky" on cooler rides...so I keep 'em covered either with knickers or tights at 55 or below.

I'll wear full tights if the temps are in the 30's and not expected to get above 40. In the low to mid 40's I wear thermal knickers. High 40's and low 50's a lightweight knicker. Mid 50's to mid 60's I wear knee warmers.

You really should cover your knees in cooler temperatures.

I wear full tights once it is high 40's or cooler. I have a special Pearl Izumi jacket I wear around the same temp.

I am with you. Don't know about the benefit to the knees but I am a bit of a wuss when it comes to the cold weather.
