Subject: Cycling shoes- worth it?
I've been training for about 5 months now and I seem to be spending so much money on kit and little bit extra's all the time.

My newest dilemma is cycling clip on shoes. Are they really worth it? Would they really save me extra time. For example- if I reckon it takes me 1 hour 20 to ride 40km's at the moment wearing my trainers on the bike (with the little cages I slip the front of my trainers into)- what sort of time could I expect to shave off wearing clip on cycling shoes. I know there are 101 variables, but basically I dont want to spend yet more cash if it's only gonna save me 30 seconds (or something minimal like that) over the 40k.........

Personally if I were you I wouldn't bother. Concentrate on the run as it's easier to maek up tiem there.

If you plan on sticking with tri's you will end up with clipless pedals. They are probably good for an extra 1/2 to 1 mph in average speed (so about 1KPH or so). The real benefit is that they make you more efficient on the bike (all your pedalling energy goes into the pedal, rather than being absorbed by the soft sole of a running shoe) so you'll be fresher for the run.

As far as cost/benefit goes they're a pretty good deal, but they are not going to work miracles for you.

YES, YES, YES!!!!!

Where are you located? If you have hills, switch to clipless immediately. They make a huge difference. They allow you to pull-up on the pedals as well as push down. This is an important part of cycling - especially on hills. I resisted going clipless because I was scared of being attached to my bike. But you get used to it quickly. If you ride mountain bikes, you will get used to it even more quickly. I have the same cleats for both bikes and still tri in my mountain bike shoes.

Definetly worth it. Faster, more effecient, plus you get to go through the adjustment period where you fall over at stop lights trying to unclip. You can get set up for a reasonable price. I think performance bike is having a sale on it's shoes right now. Check it out.

I felt the same way as you, once.  However, the additional  +1 mph equates to a bigger time saving over a standard sprint bike course, than the time saving from NOT having to change shoes.

Buy some.  Not only will you be faster but you will feel SOOO much better and enjoy cycling that much more

Also, the hard soles are better for your feet.

I have enjoyed my training rides more since switching to cycling shoes.  I have hills and it has been great to have the pull to go with the push.  When you can afford it, it is a worthwhile investment imho.

Cycling shoes brought my cycling to the next level. It wasn't a huge level in terms of time, but rather it made cycling more enjoyable and enabled me to improve on my mediocre technique. Shoes are not something you need, but if you have the money I would definitely advise getting them.

I'd have to say without question to invest the funds.  Especially if you have any thoughts of doing this for a while.  I had resisted, partly due to money factors and partly due to ignorance, for a while.  Once I did it I will never turn back!  Not only did I had a consistent 2mph to my cruising speed I was able to add almost 5mph to my overall speed in a sprint.  Plus, my legs were not nearly as tired after a ride as they used to be, I figure this is pretty important since I still have a couple of miles to run afterward.

I was a little apprehensive as well, so I bought some used and got the pedals, cleats and shoes for under $50.  I've since upgraded the shoes and the pedals as I found that I really like clipless.

The pedals will save energy and make you faster on the bike...and you'll have extra energy for the run

Get them. And look at it this way, all of the money you are spending on gear, equipment, entry fees, etc all benefits you and your health. Both mentally and physically, what could be a better investment?

Thank you for justifying everything I've done over the past 10 months to my girlfriend. Well said.
