I live in Lancaster. 'Got the nerve' will be my first triathlon. Plenty of swimming at the gym so far but have never really done it in open water. I don't think I will freak out..but have read enough stories. Anyone knows where or how one can practice in open water before the end of May? Fernando

Where do you train and swim --there are some folks at the Y that are trying to get some ows practice as it warms up in April and May

Some time here before Mt Gretna, The Team In Training meets at Pinchot Park in northern york County for open water swim practice.  Think Dillsburg - Dover area.  I believe it opens mid to end of April.  (Got the Nerve / Mt. Gretna is an amazing race for a first tri!)  I'll be there again this year.

I go to Universal. Pinchot is not far away. Wouldn't mind the drive for the experience.

If you want practice I live near Blue Marsh and have done some safety boating for people last year.  Water will be awfully cold early in the season - you'll probably want a wetsuit.

I'm shopping for a wetsuit right now. How early in the season do you go out? What kind of temps are you talking about?

We usually start swimmin in Pinchot in late April or early May.  The temps at that time normally range from 55-65 degs.  You will want a wetsuit, but then again, you probably want one for GTN too.

Pinchot is an excellent place to gain experience with OWS, because it has roped off swim areas that is about 5'-6' deep at the deepest part, yet by ducking under the ropes between sections you can swim about 350 yards in 1 direction before making a turn.  The visability is poor, so it forces you to practice sighting.  The water is chilly in the spring so it prepares you well for dealing with that.  The swim areas are at the Quaker Race Day Use Area, where there are restrooms with changing areas.

Does Pinchot swim area open in april? or do you just go in april before it opens? I would love to get an OWS in before Mt. Gretna May 22.

There's not a lifeguard there in April/May, but you swim at your own risk.  Most people don't swim alone.

The official Team in Training sessions are only open to TNT participants, but once the days get longer, people will occasionally meet there 1 or 2 evenings a week just to swim together.  These sessions are not official TNT training sessions, so it is common for non-team members to participate too.  I'll try to remember to post back here when we start doing them.

from what i have heard and seen, Pinchot opens when they put out the ropes for swimming.  But last year when i went, they had signs saying no swimming due to the algae bloom.

Thanks again. I have a couple of friends who are also interested. Maybe we can gang up for a couple of outings. It sounds like staying in the ropes at first is the way to go... until you gain confidence.

Sorry to be a bit off from the original poster, but Gearboy do you use a kayak when following?  Do you go out with a group or do you get a chance to OWS and someone 'guard' over you?  I used to kayak and still have my paddle and life jacket (not the kayak, though- that went for camera lens $$ a couple years ago) and could help out if needed at Blue Marsh (I live about 20 minutes or so away and used to put in at the Church Road lot- I think that was the lot it has been a while).

Yep, I use a kayak.  When I kayak out there, I like to put in at the Church Rd lot and go to the end of the no wake zone and back - it's about 6 miles, or an hour of paddling.  I usually go solo when I am kayaking, but don't mind going with others.  I have a spare boat as well that mrs gearboy has used once or twice.

When I safety boated, it was anywhere from 1-3 guys that I followed on the water, using my garmin to track distance and time for them. Mainly I say myself as keeping an eye out for the boaters, as well as preventing drownings.

I would be up for getting in some OWS early in the season. I spend way too much time in the pool.

guitcur, what size wetsuit do you need? Send me a PM if you are interested, I have a couple that I am selling. Since you are local I would be willing to meet up somewhere & you could try them on etc if you wanted. 2 are used & 1 is brand new. BTW, as Don mentioned, I would definitely wear a wetsuit at GTN.

I live near Blue Marsh lake as well.. did a couple Open Water swims for training there last year but was hoping to get some people together for a group swim, which would be much more fun! All you guys/girls from the Blue Marsh area keep in touch and maybe we can get together and set something up!

Once it starts to warm up, we can start another OWS at Blue Marsh thread.
