Pre-race routine:

Shower/breakfast-cliff bar and banana
Event warmup:

None it was plenty warm already
Swim
  • 50m 18s
  • 2100 yards
  • 02m 24s / 100 yards
Comments:

This was really tough for me. I wasn't sure I was going to be able to finish it. I really wish I had done some open water swims before today!
What would you do differently?:

Open water swims and then some more open water swims. This was my first open water swim ever. Not a good time for the first one :)
Transition 1
  • 04m 29s
Comments:

No real problems here. But since this was my first tri I have nothing to compare it to.
What would you do differently?:

I did forget to put my race belt on at first. I had it hanging on my seat and didn't notice it until I had biked about 100 yards. Had to stop and put it on.
Would also put on sunblock. I got burned a little. Fortunately I had a decent base tan from taking the kids to the pool the last 2 weeks or it would have been worse.
Bike
  • 3h 05m 26s
  • 56 miles
  • 18.12 mile/hr
Comments:

It took me about 30 minutes of spinning at the beginning of the bike to get my HR down. I'm most pleased with the bike portion. I could have gone faster but was worried about the run.

Had 2 bottles of Accelrade and 3 accel gel on the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Not much.
Transition 2
  • 03m 28s
Comments:

Got everything done fine.
What would you do differently?:

Taken my time and let my HR come down a little more.
Run
  • 2h 11m 28s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 10m 02s  min/mile
Comments:

This was a tough run. I'm used to running half marathons at a 7:45 pace. The first 3 miles I didn't think my running legs would ever come. At each aid-stop (all 13 of them) I walked for about 20 yards and drank gatorade and/or water. I also put a cup of ice inside my hat. Miles 4-10 we pretty good. I wasnt real fast but nice and steady. At the turn around I knew I race going to finish. From the 10 mile marker on I was fading fast. Quads started tightening up and my energy level was close to zero. All I wanted to do was lay down in the shade of somebodys porch and take a nap.
What would you do differently?:

Not much I could do differently
Post race
Warm down:

Met up with my wife, 9 kids, Dad and a few other friends. Drank some water and ate some baked ziti and cake.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of open water swims and the heat.

Event comments:

Inspite of my time not being what I wanted I had a blast. This was my first ever Tri and hopefully not the last. I plan to come back next here. Now i need to go find some Open water to train in bye...

Great race Rob! Great first triathlon!

I have done open water swims before and had no problems, but I ran into the same type of issue where I questioned myself on finishing. Then the run was brutally hot. It was hard to hold back, but it was definitely a neccesity.

Sorry we did get to meet in person. I hope you and the family had a nice weekend away. Enjoy the rest this week.
Congrats - Heidi

First tri, first OW swim, first 1/2 IM, nasty hot weather, and you still got through. Nice work.

Wahooo - your officially a triathlete now Rob!!!  And the first one a  1/2 IM!

Such a great job - battling the mental aspect during your first OW swim and getting back into a good place on the bike - way to go! So hot - yet you stuck with it and didn't lie down on anyone's porch for a nap!

Excellent!  You did a great job.  I can remember setting up for my first ow swim, and I don't think I could have hopped in the chesapeake for my first one.  Certainly not for that distance, on that course.  Don't lose sight of what a monumental task completing that swim was.  You done good.  Celebrate that victory ... and get back to the training... I enjoy following your blog.

It's been a privilege to follow your training over these months.  Your dedication is truly inspiring.

I'm sorry that you don't feel good about the race, but I join everyone else in thinking that you took on a monster for your first race and did really well.

Ok, so when's the IM?
