Swim in the center or left side of the channel.  It's faster.

Do a practice swim from the condo complex "Blockade Runner" to the marina where you will exit the water.  The first half of the swim is straight, and it is at this point you turn left and need to think about sighting.  It helped a ton to know where I was heading and swim the shortest path.

Doug speaks the truth on all things swim!!  For some reason everyone else stayed to the right last year and it looked like it might have been pretty crowded---I had a nice easy float down the left side by myself!!

For the bike---make sure to check the map before the race---last year I know some folks got caught short on nutrition because the first aid station wasn't till around mile 30.

For the run---if you plan on being out there past dark have a light available (special needs at least) since I understand the course got dark last year once the sun went down.

And I'll just add that I did it last year as my first full distance and loved it---real hard NOT to sign-up for this year!!  You guys will have a blast---we did the swim Doug mentioned above as a BT group swim which was GREATSmile

X2 on having some sort of light if you are out on the run after dark. That last bridge before the finish line was pitch black except for the occasional passing car. It would not be good to trip and wipe out less than a half mile before the finish line. The run course was hillier than I expected and be prepared for some long waits if you plan on taking the ferry back across the river. It was pretty cold out there last year so make sure you have something warm for after the race. I would definitely do the race again, but my wife has banned me from IM training this year.

Some great points have been mentioned all ready.  If you do a practice swim don't forget to pay attention to the tide date for Masonboro Inlet, if you swim at the wrong time you'll be fighting the current and make it an arse kicker of a swim.  The tides listed below are what I found online for Nov 12 and 13.

Day        High      Tide  Height   Sunrise    Moon  Time      % Moon
           /Low      Time    Feet    Sunset                    Visible

F   12      Low   5:39 AM     0.8   6:41 AM    Rise 12:11 PM      33
    12     High  12:12 PM     4.1   5:09 PM     Set 11:12 PM

Sa  13     High  12:48 AM     3.2   6:42 AM    Rise 12:42 PM      42
    13      Low   6:42 AM     0.9   5:09 PM
    13     High   1:08 PM     3.8

The only thing you need to remember about the swim is from the beach start keep the first buoy on your right, at the end of the long straight away near the Blockade Runner, there will be a boat with one of those inflatable squiggly guys, keep that on your left.  No other bouys come into play.  Some folks most have missed that in the race meeting because I saw quite a few folks wasting time swimming around a bouy that was way out of the way wasting valuable time and energy.

If you breath to the right the sun will be directly in your eyes all the way down the long straight away so have some shaded goggles.

Take a large black Sharpie to mark your SN and T2 bags with your number in case the stickers fall off the bag.

Have fun, wish I could go back but have been banned from IM's til 2012.

I'm very seriously considering doing B2B, but I want to get my first HIM done before I commit.  I'm doing IM 70.3 NOLA.  I'll decide after that.

Listen to Rottie, Skippy, and Brown dog- I was with them the morning before the race and did the practice swim, which started from across the street from the Blockade Runner which I happened to be staying at.  The practice swim provided a lot of confidence in what was to come on that cold race morning.
That first swim buoy gets congested, so get out fast from the start, once you turn after the first buoy get into a rythm and stay there.  As far as the bike it is pretty flat and boring- even coming from a flatlander like myself.
For the run, focus on some hills- the bridges really killed me!  Not so much the fact that they are hills, but simply up and down on asphalt and concrete- I wasn't prepared.
I did my first HIM in April of 09, another HIM in June of 00, then sprints and an oly through IM training from July- November.
It's a great race, and I would love to go back someday!

How about the temperature on race day? Whats the water temp and air temp at start time?

Great suggestion; the labels they provide do not stick very well on the garbage bags they give you. I had some clear packing tape that I used to secure the labels to the bags.

Water temp was high-60's if I remember correctly---I just remember it was perfect wetsuit tempEmbarassed  Most (including me) had full sleeves but there was the guy wearing just jammers.............

The air temp was around 40---so a cool start for the full----I know there was A LOT of talk of what to wear for the bike---getting out of the water into the cool/cold air wet----I was very pleased with my choice of my one-piece trisuit the whole race with a long sleeve, full zipper bike jersey for the bike with some real cheap (wal-mart...) cotton stretchy gloves that I took off after about the first hour.  The bike jersey was perfect for the whole bike (high around 60...).

I know you asked about start temps BUT the other thing to keep in mind with the time change that it gets dark early!!  So unless you plan to be done by 5pm think about something warmer for the run (or at least in run special needs!!)---the temps last year dropped pretty fast once the sun went down---luckily last year I was finishing at sunset BUT I walked around the finish area for a while before thinking about getting changed and I started to get REAL cold real fast---changed into full sweats and still took a little bit to get warm.

Keep up the good questions and be sure to read the race reports from the last two year (both the full and half)---lots of good info in those too!!!

Oh and ONE other thing I learned from last year------you need to get the mods to move this to the "IM Race" section instead of the IM talkTongue out  (Yeah I started the thread last year and had to get them to move it too......)

I was considering this race as well. It is a point to point race correct? How does this impact the logistics? How far is the finish from the start?

Yup point to point race----everyone meets at T1 and they bus you to the swim start (not really any parking there...)--you swim and finish at T1 (obviously...) then bike and end at the battleship (NOT near T1) and then run with the finish back at the battleship....

The swim start/T1 and battleship aren't super close but I didn't think it was too bad---of course I stayed at a hotel that was about half way between sooooo.....the logistics weren't horrible (I didnt' think)---Set-Up does a good job---obviously Fri you have to drop-off bike and T1/T2 bags and special needs (can do that race morning too I think)---they had all that at T1---you put your bags in huge tubs and they get them where they need to be.  Race morning you wear what you want to the swim start and then put that in a bag and then into another tub---that then becomes your after race clothing...I did the race by myself (nobody traveling with me) and had NO problems with everything---they provided buses from the downtown area (across the river from the battleship) to T1 so race morning I parked downtown (along the run route actually) and hoped on a bus to T1---put my water on my bike and caught a bus to the swim start.....did 140.6 and grabbed a water taxi (provided) across the river with all my gear and got right back into my car............

The swim start is around 2 miles from T1. T1 & T2 are around 15-18 miles apart. Thus, the start and finish are 15-18 miles apart.

From a racers perpective it does not impact the logictics at all really. Be aware that you will only have access to one transition bag at a time, so pack in doubles to cover your bases. Only your iron-sherpas have to figure out the logistics moving around to see you throughout the day.
