Subject: i need a bike fast!
Hey everyone. I finally have signed up to do my first tri in Aug. I have been running and swimming, but have not bought a bike yet. I need to find a good bike ASAP at an extremely low cost. Unfortunately I don't have more than $200 to spend right now. :-( Anyone know of anything?? Please let me know if you do. All help would be appreciated.

I think the terms "good bike" and "extremely low cost" aren't usually two terms you'll hardly ever find in the same sentence. for $200 I don't think you can get much of anything. give ebay a shot but you'll probably end up spending more that $200 for an at least decent bike.

borrow one from a friend.

you do have friends, don't you?

if not, rent one. DON'T buy a $200 bike. it's wasted money.

You can buy a bike for $200, but you'll be shopping at WalMart.  I'm the cheapest person on the planet, and even I had to spend $350 for an e-bay bike (which most people here would probably scoff at, but I happen to love my bike).  If you're determined to do this triathlon with a $200 bike or nothing at all, then go ahead and do it.  But it would be better to borrow one if you can, and save a little longer.  Because if you decided to continue with tri's (and you will), that $200 bike will not be good enough for very long.  You can make payments on bikes, you know.  And with a $200 'down payment' you can probably get a decent bike.  Just thought I'd mention that.

I was able to find a clunker mountain bike at a yard sale for $60. It's not a fast bike, a pretty bike, or a great bike, but it got me through my first two tris just fine. I bought a road bike this year once I knew that I was actually going to stick around this sport for a while! My advice is just to keep your eyes open! Good luck!

I rushed into buying a cheap bike...and now that money is gone and once I decided to stay with triathlons I had to spend even more money. Rent one first...if you like Tris and decide to stick with it...save up and get something nice. In the meantime...borrow one to train on

I bought a $200 Trek 1000 at the end of my first Tri season. I rode the heck out of it, and it was a marked  improvement over my mountain bike for competing in triathlon. I used it for my last race of the first season, and all last year... When I decided I was going to stick with this silly sport for an extended period of time, I decided to drop some cash and get a nice bike.

I guess my advice is... if you've got $200 and you see a bike you like, and it fits you, and you're just trying this sport out, then buy it, ride it, and see how you do. It's the engine that's important anyway... not the bike...A well conditioned rider could smoke us all on a BMX bike!!!   If you decide to stick with this sport THEN save your money and get a nice bike. Give it a year or so. No need to sink BIG BUCKS into a nice bike right now if you don't know if your interest in triathlon has the longevity to justify payments on a bike!!!!

Also, don't rush into anything... You've got until August. Keep your eyes open. Look around. Ride whatever you can get your hands on until then.

FWIW...

addendum:

if you buy a better bike ($1000 plus) and you find that you don't want to stick with the sport then it's easier to sell it than some $200 jalopy.

You can get a good older bike for that price, but unfortunately those deals don't usually come around when you are looking for them. I got my late 80s/early 90s Cannondale Criterium for less than $100 CDN - so like $2 USD and I used it for triathlons for two years and criterium racing for 1 year. Now it's my winterbike and heck I probably still ride it more often than my summer bike.

I found that the best deals were in the local classified or on craigslist. You might find someone moving and get a good bike that has to be sold. On ebay the bikes go to the highest bidder, locally the bike goes to the first bidder. Also check out the consignment stores. There are two good ones here for bikes.

Good luck,
Jen

I got my road bike on ebay for $175 + $50 shipping, but it was listed under mountain bikes.

I am a new triathlete as well, I just bought bike on ebay about 4 months ago and I am already upgrading...but if you want a cheap bike...$200 worth, Ebay may be the only place to get one that cheap..unless you have a local bike shop that has some used ones.

If you can borrow a friends bike to train and just rent for race day...that usually cost between $20-$40...that is the cheapest way to go.

If your interested, I am selling the bike I was using on Ebay, it is equipped for triathlongs. The Ebay Item # is 7162897848

Best of luck!

thanks everyone!! My best friend who lives in Colorado is going to ship me her bike. Anyone have any idea how much that would cost? I am going to train with it and if i like it she will sell it to me cheap. It's a $650 dollar bike and i'll get it for probably 1-200 dolla's. Not bad for my first tri bike!!

Do i need to train with my feet clipped or should i just do my first one without messing with that?

Clipless shoes and pedals are going to set you back **at least** another $100.00. I'd say hold off if money is an issue! If not, no better time than the present to get yourself used to going clipless!!!!
