Subject: HIM before IM
I have decided to follow the IronFit plan for my first IM. I plan on doing IMFL and have heard that you should do a HIM 8-10 weeks before the IM. Augusta 70.3 is about 6 weeks out. Is anyone else that is doing IMFL also doing Augusta 70.3? Is this enough time to recover for FL. Thanks

I am going to say no, 6 weeks out from your first IM is too close, the Half will put a dent in some very important training you need to be doing that will be much more effective preparing for your race. If it was more like 3 months before, I would say sure, but not 6 weeks.

I agree with Bryan that it is to close. You don't have to do a HIM before IM or do one in July or August.

I'm doing IMFL as well. I'm doing two HIMs one late April then in late June. After those my IM training will start. I'm doing two Olys one in July and one in August and may do a IM aquabike in last September but three months prior to IM I'm focusing on getting training in.

I like that I have two parts to my season so now my focus isn't on IM but on my two HIMs with late June one being my other A race.

x3 - IMO too close to your first IM.  However, since you are doing IMF, you have lots of options for a HIM 3+ months out.

I used the Be Iron Fit program and thought the HIM worked out real well for my first IM, it's part of the plan.  My HIM was 9 weeks out from B2B and it was for pacing purposes not a PR.  I had a great HIM and a fine first IM distance race.  I wouldn't do it any later then it's called for and 6 weeks will throw a wrench into your last couple weeks of training which are some big weeks following BIF.

Good luck

Opinion seems to be a big "no" on that one. But for what it's worth, I'm doing Augusta 70.3 and then IMFL. My coach at EC seems to think it's enough time to recover and will be a good chance to practice nutrition, pacing, etc. Plus, Augusta wasn't a super tough course when I raced last year (super fast river, fast bike, flat run). There may be some merit to the argument that I'll be sacrificing a long workout that weekend.

i wouldn't mind getting a few more opinions on this subject myself.

ive spoken with a few people that did imaz last year and they said to do the soma tri (4 weeks prior) as my long workout that week then begin my taper.

imaz is my first im.  would i be remiss attempting this?  i, obviously, am more concerned with finishing the full, than seeing how i fare in the half.  though i totally understand using that day for pacing/nutrition/tranistion-practing purposes...

IMFL will also be my first. I'd love some more input.

I wouldn't "race" a HIM 4-6 weeks out.  At that point you will be doing some serious volume and there is no time to taper, race, and then recover.   You could do the race at IM pace and practice your nutrition and pace, but you could also just do that from home.

Last year I did a HIM 5 weeks out and my taper was taking off the day before the race to drive down there.  I was about half way through the bike when I started yawning and had trouble staying motivated.  I ended up turning it into a nice training day.  It would have been a complete waste if my wife hadn't been racing too.

It will be my first IM at FL so I am up for all opinions but here is my line of thinking about doing Augusta 70.3 before IMFL.

It will be used for racing prep (nutrition, pacing, gear) and not an all out event.
Not racing for 2 months in Tri season makes me jittery to race.
I also feel that no workouts will be sacrificed as the 70.3 will be a great workout in it self.
After the 70.3, recover, then build, followed by a taper.

Why pay $225-250 for a training day?If you want to do a race, race. I wouldn't do a 70.3 not racing to practice IM nutrition and the like as I do that every single ride/run I do.It can punch a big whole in your training plan. I did a HIM about 10 weeks before IM Canada and my June had less volume biking and running than May because of it. I did short taper but I did need to recover so it effected about 10-12 days of training.Obviously you can & will do what you want but many who are coached or are coaches advised against it. If you ask enough people some will agree with you as they are doing the same thing. Does that make it best choice?
