Has anyone here done the Lake in the Hills tri and what do you think of it? Do you feel the lake swim can be/is beginner friendly? This will be my first OWS swim and I believe the swim portion start time based on estimated completion time, where I can set myself toware the back of the pack. Let me know what you think.

I love it. I've done it twice and thoroughly enjoyed myself both times. The swim is in a funky little lake, and the bike takes some hills but nothing unmanageable. You should TOTALLY do it!!!

I agree with 2Goggs on this one.  I have done it twice.  Great venue.    The wierd thing about it is that there are two transition areas which you will have to set up both before the race.  They give you a large bag at T1 to put all of your stuff in when you leave the water.  They will transport your bag to the finish line for you.  T2 is basically switching shoes or just jumping off the bike if you aren't clipped in.  In the swim you start off in waves depending on the swim speed you give them when you register.  The bike is pretty hilly at the beginning and there a couple nice hills at the half way point, but nothing to fret about.  The run is 4.5 miles and not flat, but very doable.

I live in the area and will be doing it for the first time this year. I am constantly training though on the course over the summer. I run through the neighborhood out here and swim in the lake in the summer.

Swim- Water is not clear by any means but it is clean. Swim should be straight forward

Transitions- They are weird because there are two different locations for T1 and T2. Sounds a little confusing and an extra step to me but I haven't heard too many complaints from the people that have done it.

Bike- Will be hilly on the way out and a little bit on the way back. But the way back will have a long downhill section where you can pick up some decent speed.

Run- Will be hilly. So prepare for that. I am used to it out here because that is all I run on but for others it might be a bit of a surprise.

I can't wait to do it. Should be fun.

I'm bummed out.. I wanted to do this race, since I live so close, but already committed to Naperville with my MIL and some friends, and they are on the same day Oh well, maybe next year!

Thanks for pointing out about the lake, though, I'll check it out for some OWS before the tri season.

I have done this race for three years in a row and this will be my fourth.  I enjoy it.  Everything said above is true.  Two transitions, nice bike, some hills but nothing bad,  run hadsome hills and it is a 4 mile run.  Most poepleexpect the normal 5K, that is not the case.

I am doing this as my first tri.  Looking forward to it.  I hear they do swims on the lake prior to the event for a small fee so I will be checking that out.
