bryancd - 2010-03-01 1:09 PM I listen to podcasts almost exclusively when I run and bike train

x2.  When I listen to something when I train...it's mostly pod casts.  Because if I don't listen to them while I train, I won't have time to listen to them at all.  I get funny looks when I start laughing in the middle of a run or bike though...

I listen to audiobooks and music when I train...sometimes even when swimming! For me its more that I really like music and I really like books/stories...I don't usually have any other times to just sit there and listen to music, so I do it when I train. I like to think of it as killing 2 birds with one stone.

I have no problems racing without it.

Lately, I use an ipod about 50% of the time when running, listening music or podcast of some sort.  Sometimes if I'm really focused on keeping a certain pace I have to turn it off though.

Oh, and gearboy, THANK YOU for your remarks about 'train like you race'.  That mantra has been bugging me for a long time, and I've been meaning to start a thread on that to see what others think.  In fact, I think I'll start a thread right now....

I only agree with the long ride alone without groups, and that only needs to happen once in a while. A group allows you to draft, reminds you to eat/drink, corrects your pace when you start slowing and slows your pace when you are feeling good. They also provide encouragement when you hit your low moments. All of these are important to master alone before race day. For the ipod though, I wear one all the time (run and swim only).

I run with music most of the time.  I did do a long one (for me) a couple weeks ago without tunes just to make sure it really didn't matter.  For me it really doesn't matter either way so I opt for tunes in training.  Used my ipod for my first half mary last year since I trained with it.  After reading this thread (and others), I think I will ditch it this year and interact more with the spectators and volunteers.

I don't use the ipod on the bike because I'm not as comfortable going fast without being able to hear what is going on around me.

I vote for "who gives a crap?!"

Seriously, train the way you want and don't give any advice unless someone asks... and then re-consider giving it.

I personally liked to hear many sides of an argument... Then, everything is debatable until I make the decision.

I have been around too long to know that many don't let facts burden their opinions.

My philosophy is I do whatever I want, whatever keeps it interesting and enjoyable.  If I'm not having fun, I'm not going to keep doing it.

I don't listen to anything, because I don't want to.  I find that it distracts me from the task at hand, and that developing mental focus is part of training.

I have no problem with other people listening to music.  I welcome them to do so.

From Mach or April I rarely listen to music when I run and never when I ride.  When it is all wintery and icy outside, I listen to music becasue the track I run on is 15 laps per mile and there is a good chance that if I don;t have something toi distract me from seeing the same three blue-haired ladies wqalking around the track over and over, I will stop running or throw myself over the railing.
