Swim
Comments: I lost a lot of steam coming around the last buoy since I got dunked when someone swam over me and swallowed a good bit of water. The water was really murky (I'd put visibility about 6 inches), so it was difficult to avoid getting kicked in the face. What would you do differently?: I'd stick to the back of the wave. I lined straight on with the buoy, which resulted in me getting swarmed as people tried to round it. Transition 1
Comments: I started out strong - if a bit tipsy after the swim - but my race number popped off my jersey. The resulting re-pinning of the number ate a lot of time. What would you do differently?: Not waste as much time futzing with the number. Bike
Comments: I was really slow coming off the swim. My legs felt like they were made of iron and were incredibly tight. This should have been my strongest leg, but I was getting blown away out there. I lost a few minutes due to a traffic screw up on the course, too. What would you do differently?: Pick up the pedal speed a bit and not worry too much about getting blown away. Transition 2
Comments: Easy transition the second time around. Dismount was good, legs felt good. What would you do differently?: Not much. Run
Comments: The first mile was rough due to "jelly legs." I felt really strong after I passed the marker, though. Since this was my first race, I kept thinking, "Why did I sign up for this?" It felt great crossing the finish line, and I felt like I finished pretty strong. I had a little trouble with my foot, which I cut open pretty good on the run in to the swim. It was a little sore, which I think may have slowed me down. What would you do differently?: Try to stay a little lighter on my feet. Post race
Warm down: Stretching, followed by a huge peanut butter and jelly sandwich. What limited your ability to perform faster: Not enough sleep, cuts on my foot from the swim start. Event comments: This was my first race, and I will say that it was really enjoyable. I'm looking forward to doing more and will definitely be back next year to compete. I overslept the morning of the race by about an hour, leaving me scrambling to get everything out the door in time to meet my ride. Luckily, I had everything packed and ready to go the night before. Surprisingly, too, was the fact that I didn't forget anything. Since the race was about an hour away, I did manage to get a light breakfast in on the ride over: two bananas, water, followed by a Gu about 15 minutes before my wave started.
A light run with a teammate to get the blood flowing and to wake up my muscles. I felt good, though I was terribly sleepy up until the wave start.
