Subject: New To Salt Lake...
Hey everyone. I am actually not in Salt Lake yet, but wanted to get the heads up for different things before I move over there. I am currently in Colorado, but my fiance just got accepted to PT school at the U of U. We will be moving over there in about 45 days!

I am currently training for the Coeur d'Alene Ironman, and will need some advice on good, long bike routes with good roads and not a ton of traffic.

Also, how about cheap public pools to swim in? Where do most people do their OWS at?

My race is the end of June - so as soon as we get to SLC, the heavy training will be going. Any ideas? Thanks!!

WELCOME TO THE VALLEY!!!
I'm going to assume that you will be living near the U? FYI, if not, there are tons of pools all over the valley.
Long bike routes => Several options, as for traffic, well if you've been on the Front Range, we don't really have traffic here in comparison.  I'm not an expert on routes (there are others around here who know better than I) but you may want to head up Immigrations Canyon and out eastward over Big Mtn.  You can also head down Foothill over to Bonneville Shoreline trail then to Wasatch (from here you can hit other canyons or head south towards American Fork and Provo).
Pools => Check out the local rec ctrs (Salt Lake City Sports Complex on Guardsmen may be your best bet, bring your wife with you if you decide to do a membership - get a UofU corporate rate).  You can check out a lot of the pool locations in the valley through www.recreation.slco.org (disclaimer: I work for county p&r)
OWS => East Canyon Res.

Check out group workouts for rides and swims on desert-sharks.com/BB  or www.bbtc.net (Cycling club)

Anymore questions... just ask

You may want to check at into the pool at the U. You may be able to use it for free and they have great trainers/coaches available. There are some great trails around for running and mtn bike. Don't know about road routes though. I've heard a lot about desert sharks for group training so check them out too.

Thanks you guys. I will look into all of the suggestions! We are really excited to make our way over to SLC. I am thinking about doing the Bear Lake Brawl 1/2 iron on August 28th. I debated over the one the same day in Provo, but another discussion thread is pointing me towards the BLB 1/2.

Any thoughts on that? Thanks.

What I have heard about the two half distances is that Provo isn't as scenic, and the traffic is worse. Bear lake is in a very small town, and the lake itself is gorgeous, so, very scenic and little traffic. Also, I'm not familiar with lakes and such in your current neck of the woods, but up here in most lakes, you cannot see at all under the water further than right in front of your face, in Bear Lake you can see quite a bit.

I am doing the Bear Lake Classic on Aug 7th and the Utah Half on Aug 28th due to the Bear lake Brawl being on the same day as the Utah Half. This way I can do 2 local halfs. I just have not been able to bet the Bearlakeclasic.com website to let me register. Welcome to Utah!

Welcome to Utah!!! The U has a great pool, but hours are sometimes limited.  But there are pools all over SLC you can check out.

Also... check out www.desert-sharks.com  it's a local tri club and we have a great list of events and workshops for the summer

Awesome, thanks! Is anyone doing any spring/olympic tri's, century rides or anything along those lines between May 10th and June 15th?

Cool. Well, I am doing the Coeur d'Alene Ironman on June 27th, and will be moving to Salt Lake around May 9th/10th. So, I would like to find a few brush up, build up...whatever races primarily in mid/end of May. I don't think I'll want to drive to St. George, but anything remotely close to Salt Lake would be good. Like I said, olympics, long bike rides, duathlons..anything works .

the desert sharks website has a great race calendar on the site that will show all the races this summer. :D

Also... SLC running Co. is doing a 5k May 1st, and it's free to the first 500 that sign up.   If you are interested.  There is also Legacy Duathlon coming up
