Subject: Giving it a Tri
Hi Everyone!
I'm a former competitive springboard diver, recently finished with university athletics. I've never done a Tri before but have begun training and would like to finish an olypmic distance by the end of August. I have a few sprint races lined up to due before that as well. I'm stoked to taking part in the sport, and can't wait to experience my first race! Any indoor training tips for those pesky rainy pacific northwest days? Any words of wisdom or inspiration?

Hi Kirstin...welcome to the group! And that's from a former high school swimmer and springboard diver too. But geez I think that was about a hundred years ago! I do a lot of indoor training too in the cold New England winter months, and it basically revolves around doing alternate stints on the treadmill and bike trainer, going from one to the other and back again. Good for experiencing what you'll go through during a race. I try to play games on the equipment to get relief from the boredom, like intervals on both bike and treadmill, or tilting the treadmill and doing some simulated hills. 3 times per week I also add in light to moderate weight training, mostly upper body, arms, shoulders, etc., since I no longer have access to a pool, I'm just trying to keep my strength for when I can resume outdoor swimming.

Hope some of this helps, but ask plenty of questions as there's lots of great people here...you'll enjoy this BBS.

Welcome to this site! Very cool that you are doing several triathlons this year. As far as indoor training, I agree with Max. Fighting the boredom is the biggest problem. I use a treadmill and bike trainer also. I've learned to like to run outside in the rain. Most people hate it and then I get the trail to myself! I dress in layers to keep (mostly) dry. And wear a hat!

Good luck :-)

Welcome Kristin,So glad you decided to do a tri! That's awesome. As for boredom, I combat with my basic instinct to survive! Just getting through my run and spin classes is enough to keep me preoccupied! No really, the usual music, playing with the settings on the bike and the treadmill, doing sprints/intervals, counting sheep whatever works! Happy training and good luck on your races! Ovetta.

Welcome, Kirstin!

Ahh, the rainy northwest!!

Welcome to the board--and keep us up to date about your progress! I'm with... whoever said... she learned to like running in the rain. It is kind of fun! Not so much on the bike, though. But I find that as long as I can find a good program on the television, I don't mind using my trainer in the attic!

Good to have you hear,

Dana
