Any suggestions for good, affordable tri shorts that can go the distance during an IM and still provide some comfort?

Shorts are a very personal choice.  You simply have to find ones that YOU are comfortable wearing.

FWIW, I use DeSotos.  And use them for all my riding--short/long, racing/training.  Love them.

x2 shorts are very personal.

I love zoot products.  i prefer as little padding as possible.  Never had an issue with them.

I'll also say it's way to personally fitting an issue for anyone to help you with.
I can ride a century in Zoot but the seam rips me up on the run during a HIM.
I can ride a century and run in Oomph! Lava shorts but the pad is a touch awkward and I can feel it the whole way even though it doesn't chafe.
I'm going to use Orca 226 distance shorts for my IM this year because I've not found a downside to them at all for me.

Happy with my Zoot shorts...did my IM last year in them and was fine.  The key is to wear what you plan to wear for the race for your long training rides.

Have to say I was disappointed with the Oomph! brand tri shorts I bought...seams weren't as well constructed as in my Zoot shorts...led to a bit of chafing.

like everyone else has said, it's a pretty personal choice. we're all built a little differently. as are the shorts.

i LOVE my DeSoto tri shorts. they're low cut in both the waist and the thigh (4" inseam i think). i ONLY race in them though. they have a tiny pad which is great for running and ample for the bike.

i've only done sprints, olys and 1 HIM in them though (i rotate between 2 pairs).

for my IM race in November i plan on cycling in true cycling bibshorts and jersey, and then changing completely to just butterfly running shorts and running shirt for the run. from what i read there is a somewhat descrete transition area so stripping completely to change isn't gonna get you arrested as it might in a oly or HIM open transition area.

i can do 56 miles in tri shorts but i don't think i could handle 112 miles cycling in them.

You might be surprised.  I didn't think I would be, but now I'm actually more comfortable on my very long rides (talking 90-100+) in tri shorts...less bulk from the chamois getting compressed against the side of the saddle, I think.  Takes getting used to, like most things on the bike.

One thing I sure wouldn't do:  Make an IM the first time I tried riding over 100 miles in tri shorts.  Race in what you trained in.

If you are using Desoto, do you recommend the Forza or the 400-mile short for IM distance?  Or what about the Forza and the seat pad?

I pretty much lived in zoot shorts last year training for IM. Enough padding, no problems running in them either.

Kathy, do you keep the 400 mile shorts on for the run (IM distance) or change?

i guess that's true. i haven't even cycled on my tri bike once this year (i know i know). but my cycle fitness is and will continue to get much better this year, so i indeed might prefer my tri shorts come November for my IM.  only time will tell

I can't recall if my newer pair are the Forza or the Carrera model.  I also have an older pair which is probably more similar to the Carrera in fabric.  I am not a big fan of thick padding on the bike.  I have a pair of regular bike shorts and virtually never wear them.  I have done IMs in the DeSoto's and have ridden for 120+ miles in them.

Same here but I can't run in the 400 mile shorts. The pad is to big. Riding in them is nice though. My Oomph is the best of both worlds.
