Total Time = 1h 40m 58s
Overall Rank = 95/98
Age Group = 26-30
Age Group Rank = 7/7
Pre-race routine:

Up at 5:15. Eggs on multi-grain bagel for breakfast. Pack the car, get the kids & wife up & ready to go.
Event warmup:

Walking back & forth from the car, as I kept forgetting things. That was my warm up. Very little stretching
Swim
  • 18m 29s
  • 400 meters
  • 04m 37s / 100 meters
Comments:

On about my second stroke, I took in some water, attempted to stand (as I knew the bottom was right there), couldn't touch & started to panic. I need more open water practice. After I rounded buoy #1, I kept up for about another 40M, then floated on my back with a little kick to move w/ the current. I eventually gave in & grabbed a boat to catch my breath, twice.

I was in the first group, with group #2 roughly 3 minutes behind me. It was hard swimming with group 3 overtaking me.

The combination of wearing a swim cap for the first time and not enough oxygen while swimming gave me quite a bad headache as I exited the water.
What would you do differently?:

More practice - don't panic!
Transition 1
  • 04m 44s
Comments:

Trouble getting socks on. I couldn't dry off. I probably should've just kept my suit on instead of taking it off (short-legged, short-sleeve suit). Advise of race official to wear shorts under didn't help, as they just got wet.
What would you do differently?:

Keep swim suit on for remainder of race. Practice drying feet.
Bike
  • 49m 55s
  • 20 kms
  • 24.04 km/hr
Comments:

There was no race official at the turn-around, so I went about 50M too far. The turnaround could have been labeled better.
What would you do differently?:

Push harder. Take in full Goo pack in T1
Transition 2
  • 00m 50s
Comments:

Racked the bike & stumbled out.
What would you do differently?:

Run the bike in, instead of a hobble.
Run
  • 27m
  • 4 kms
  • 06m 45s  min/km
Comments:

Running on grass was different for me. I was too busy looking for ruts & holes to stay out of. Once I got on the road, I was fine.

Run was 2 laps of the same course. On lap 2, I could have pushed a bit more. Again, turn-around point was a bit confusing for me.
What would you do differently?:

Run harder on lap 2.
Post race
Warm down:

A bit of stretching after I changed into warm, dry clothes. I slept for 2 hours once I got home :)

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Swim / breathing

Event comments:

I had two goals for my first trithlon: 1) finsh 2) don't be last.

Well, I finished, and I was 95 / 98, so I wasn't last. I met my two goals!

Good job on your first!  The first one is always a bit of an experiment.  But you finished and you did great!

Thanks - I found out about the Buffalo Triathlon Club while there, and I may join them for some open water swims. Anyone here a member of this group?

Being in Buffalo, we only have 1/2 year to compete locally in triathlons. Luckily we do have some nice indoor facilities for keeping in shape during the winter months.

I look forward to reporting positive results in the next race
