Subject: Theraputic Use Exemption for Medication
I posted this in the health issue forum but didn't get any responses.

"I was diagnosed with bronchitis in January and in the process of treatment was prescribed albuterol. My doctor warned me that I may have breathing issues for a while and will need to use the albuterol. The bronchitis flared up last week and I'm using the albuterol again.

If I'm healthy I plan to race Cal 70.3 on Saturday but discovered that albuterol is on a list of banned substances and I need to file a Theraputic Use Exemption. I'm a MOP athlete, with no chance at a Clearwater or Kona slot. Do I need to file this exemption? If I indicate on my medical form at registration that I'm using albuterol am I setting myself up for a DQ?

Finally, if you think I should file does anyone have a link for the form for the exemption in the US?

I know several BT'ers have asthma. Do all of you file exemptions for your medication?"

I went ahead and got a 'declaration of use' for Albuterol and Advair as they changed the status of those this year from needing a TUE to just a declaration. Basically go to http://www.usada.org/and download a Delcaration of use form and fill it out
https://www.usantidoping.org/files/pdfs/USADA-Dec-of-Use.pdfand mail it in. Once they received it you'll get an email confirmation and login credentials to the usada website. From then on you can file them electronically. It's really easy and only took a couple of days to get the confirmation back.

For those athletes that are part of the testing pool. they can also file the Declaration of Use form online as well at:

http://www.usada.org/athletes/

One other interesting change to the WADA/USADA guidelines is the use of IV fluids is severely limited now, basically in the ER only according to the current language. This should make the Ironman in Kona interesting for the pros since they test the top 3 plus a few random from the top 10 finishers
