For the most recent telecast of the Kona race NBC profiled a Navy officer who trained for his Ironman entirely on a trainer while he was out at sea (at least it came off that he did all of his training at sea). He seemed to do alright in his race.

Yes, I did it for IMAZ 06 (it was held in April and I live in Chicago so you can imagine why I was on the trainer all the time).

Oh, FWIW, I also did 100% of my long runs on the treadmill (yeah, 2-3 hours on the treadmill a few times).

It was totally possible but needless to say, I won't be signing up for a spring Ironman again.

I did a ton of prep-work on the trainer for B2B last year.

It was definitely a mental training opportunity.  I am a much better runner mentally because of it, I'm certain.

PennState - 2010-03-21 11:16 PM I remember some dude from Israel did it... did quite well at an Ironman too. It was posted here about a year ago... I will try to find it.

here it is. Konrad is in my team. He doesn't use any powermeter, heartrate monitor or gps. Just a simple watch because he hates all these devices.
He is incredible because he can seat on the bike 2hrs pushing like an animal and just feeling himself. The amazing part is that he doesn't seat on the indoor bike more than 2hrs because he consider it insane.
He went to Israel with max 2hrs long rides, lot of long runs but he is actually a champ on running, 2h32 on marathon standalone.

Basically: yes go for it but you need to customize your training, you need experience and if you are at the first trial, don't do it.

Haven't done it. but it seems quite a few people do a majority of their biking inside during the winter months with maybe a long ride on the weekend when it's light out for spring HIM/IM's

I would think if you could handle the long rides on a trainer it could be done.

since I've gotten rollers it does make the time go by quicker and I get some handling practice,

There are some guys at my club that have done it. Mostly people that signed up for IMAZ when it was in April... like 2006 ish I believe... probably the same year Steve- did it.

I remember seeing them in the spin room... riding the spin bikes... for like 6+ hours.

One of my other friends trained for that same race by using the computrainer and riding the course several times on the computrainer.

It can be done... and BOY would you have a mental advantage! Whew! Kiss

I was thinking about Coldfire when I first read this topic.  He did a great job of grinding it out on the trainer and it paid off big on race day.  There is a lot of mental toughness that is gained when you sit on the trainer in aero for 6 hours, and he drew on that during the race.

Thanks all. This would be training for all races any time of the year, regardless of the season. The main problem will be living in So Cal where "winter" is 50 degrees. I don't mind riding inside when it's raining, but other than that there's no real reason to ride inside here. I rode in the garage most of last summer, with the door open looking out at the real world. That kind of sucked. But I was doing it thinking I'd be outside eventually, so I had something to look forward to.

Not trying to get to Kona or win my age group, or even set PRs. Just trying to stay in the game if possible without going insane. I know I could do halfs on 2 hour trainer rides. Would have to find out if I have it or not. Guess it just depends if I want it

I am doing that right now.  IMSG coming up and I live in northern Michigan..... 6 hours on the trainer and 2.5 on the treadmill.  The snow is finally gone so i may get outside for my taper weeks. I'm so excited!

Wow! That is impressive. I did a few 5-6 hr trainer rides and a 3 hour treadmill run in prep for IM Florida due to weather but not sure I could do the entire training like that! Good luck!

I'm doing that right now training for Ironman South Africa. The weather in Georgia was horrible this year, and it always seemed that on my days off it was raining, and brutally cold out, so I got stuck on the trainer. Longest ride on the trainer so far was 4 hours 30 minutes. Luckily the weather is getting better so I'm able to get outside and get some rides in. Don't know if I'm ever going to sign up for a race when it's in the spring again. It's been mentally tough.

Reading about Rapp's accident, on roads I've ridden before (very wide, good visibility, low traffic) makes this idea a little more palatable to me......That would 100% have killed me

Chris...there is someone I know locally that rides I don't recall but either 5 or 6 days a week all on the CT but one ride. He finds it time efficient and safer. He won his AG at IMLP and did well at Kona.

A coach told me he had an athlete that did all his IM training at home but a few workouts as he had CT, a treadmill and an endless pool.

I do a lot (but not 99%) of my bike training on my Computrainer.  In years past (3 IM's) I have done more mileage - 5 hour trainer rides and lots and lots of 3 hour rides.  This year I am taking a new approach (not IM training, but Triple T and a couple of HIM's) and doing higher power intervals and shorter distances.  So far I think my outside riding has shown improvement.  We'll see in a few weeks @ the first race.

IMO as long as you get outside for a few rides to work on your handling it can be done, it just takes planning and a lot of dedication!!

I heard someone did 100% of their marathon training on a treadmill - does that count?

I guess it can be done, but sounds terrible...

That would be the end of me!  I can bike on the trainer all day - but 20 min. on the treadmill and I'm in hell!!!

5 triathlon wins and 9th at Kona?  Pretty good 2009, with a major accident at Chicago.
