Subject: nutrition-head rush hours after long hard ride
After a long hard bike ride (50 miles & up), a few hours later if sitting for a little while & when getting up, I get a burst of a dizzy (head rush) spell-not enough to stop walking & hold on to something.  I feel my diet if fine b/f, during & after ride. Carbs & protein b/f & after ride. & power bar & many ounces of electrolyte replacement during ride.

My everyday diet consists of carbs (fruits/veggies) & good/lean proteins.  Little refined sugar & no processed white flour.

That's your heart rate running low and your heart taking too long to catch up with the sudden motion.  I seem to notice it especially after long rides, too.  Yesterday I almost blacked out after getting up off the couch in the afternoon following a longish ride earlier.

I always attributed it to blood volume/dehyrdation. I don't know if that is the medical reason, but I do know if I have had enough liquids, it is never an issue, and if I'm dehydrated, it's bad.

I almost fell into the pool last week while coaching. I was kneeling down talking to my swimmers, and I stood up to send them off and just about fell in on top of them.

POSTURAL HYPOTENSION: This type of dizziness, faintness or light-headedness results from a decrease in blood flow to the brain, due to a drop in blood pressure upon standing up.

I would think that this would be due to inadequate blood volume: If there isn't enough fluid volume in the blood vessels, then the circulatory reflexes can't restore normal blood pressure. This can happen in any condition which causes dehydration, which may be due to inadequate oral intake.

I use compression tights after a long ride or run to help and fluids (water).

You may look at the amount of water you intake during the day, as well as that during your ride and afterwards.

Just some thoughts.

I know the feeling too well.  I actually fainted at the gym after a hard spin class.  Actually I sat in the jacuzzi for 15 minutes after class and it was when I got out going for my towel.  I felt the light headedness, put my hand on the wall for stability, next thing I knew I was on the floor looking at the ceiling (and a few people looking down at me).  Had 6 staples put in the back of my head.  ER did a CT scan, found a sinus infection nothing else.  I think I might have been a little dehydrated from the day/night before.  During spin class I drank 20 oz. of water (45 min. class).

I have a resting heart rate in the high 30's, so could explain it.
