Subject: Shimano sweet 16 wheels on a Cervelo Soloist
Hi everybody, Long time lurker, first time poster. I have recently decided to start training for my first tri, and am in the market for a good used bike. I came across a 2007 Cervelo Soloist with Shimano 105 components and Shimano sweet 16 wheels. I researched the wheel and it is a tandem wheel which got me wondering wether or not this is a good wheel for training/racing on in sprint tri's? Any advice would be great!

The wheels would probably be very heavy if they're made for a tandem. They'd be great for training as they'd be more difficult to move making your training more difficult. As for racing you'd probably want something lighter.

I'm not a big fan of low spoke count training wheels but these will likely serve you well for many years as they been designed to take lots of abuse.  The wheels are a little heavier than a non-tandem set but even if racing applications, weight is not a big factor for the bike leg in a triathlon.

You may eventually want to upgrade to a set of race day wheels but these wheels will serve you well in racing and training until that point.

You could also consider trying to sell the wheelset to a tandem rider and using the money towards a great training wheelset (like Mavic Open Pro rims laced to Ultegra hubs) and likely have some money left over.

Thanks for your response! If I decide to sell these wheels and buy one that are more appropriate, are there any websites I should target my sale ad that is tandem specific? Also, what would you say I should list them at. What is a good used value?

I have no idea of the resale value of these wheels (or tandem wheels in general) but the few places that have them listed have them for around $1000 for the wheelset.

So if you decide to sell them, you should be able to get at least what I set of OpenPro's with Ultegra hubs will run you (~$300).

Shoot- if they are only worth 300 bucks I may as well keep them and but new race wheels I suppose. Hard to believe that wheels devalue as much as they do!

I'm looking for a set of Shimano Sweet 16's for my tandem.  What is the rear spacing.  I need 160mm.  If that is what you have.  Let me know if you're interested in selling.  We can discuss price.
