I have my first HIM on April 25th and have both a torpedo mount and an aero bottle. For a HIM which would you use and why? Does one provide more of an advantage over the other?

Just to note... I have ridden with both and I'm comfortable with either set up.

from an aero standpoint...

...it'll depend. Sometimes the aero bottle is more aerodynamic and sometimes it's less than a torpedo. Sorta depends what hits the wind first.

In the end, I'd say whichever you are most comfy with.

Assuming you don't need to refill the aero bottle with any specialty nutrition, the torpedo bottle. But you may want to make sure if you grab a bottle on the course, it will sit well in the cage on the bars.

Either way you will have a pretty good situation.

I would go with the torpedo though.

I have a torpedo, never had an aero mount... it is hard to get used to and for some reason I still have problems with putting one side in. I guess it's just because one side is dominant. Another reason people do like the aero is they say it helps them remember to drink.

Go with what is most comfortable to you.  I use the aero bottle because it takes me less energy to move my lips to the straw than to get the bottle from the rear.  I don't break aero when the aero bottle is used but if I have it in the back, for me, I would have to get out of aero to get it.  I know that many people don't even break stride when reaching for the rear.  I'm not one of them.

Sounds like people are interpreting "torpedo mount" to different ways.

agreed, when I hear "torpedo mount" I think cage/bands holding a regular bottle between the aerobars.

I like that setup (keeps my forearms cool!) but, especially about 1/2 through a bottle, it becomes pretty difficult to tilt it far enough to get a drink and not sit up.

Personally, I like the Invicid Design Hydration System.  Its easy to refill on the fly and the weight distribution is better (in my opinion) than the aero bar mounted systems.

I go with the aero bottle only because I get in more hydration. I know if I have to hastle with a bottle I will get lazy about it.

Thanks for the all responses....... Tomorrow I'm going to ride the course with the torpedo mount (bottle horizontal between the aero bars) and make my decision based upon this ride.

I used an aero bottle for a while, including during IM and HIM.  I recently switched to a bottle cage mounted on the aero bars with zip ties ('torpedo').  I love it.  I have no plans to go back.
