I'm biting the bullet and getting serious about swimming, which is by far, my biggest limiter. I haven't improved much in the past year, but then again, I was doing very limited swimming up to now (about 6000yards /wk) . I did, however, have my form checked out (good to go for intervals) by coaches, and recently upgraded from a depressingly dirty and dingy indoor 20 yard pool to a long-course 50 meter pool which makes swimming 1000x more enjoyable.

Am going with "Swim workouts in a Binder" - have been using it for the past 3 weeks and love it. I've been doing a lot of the long endurance workouts which are 2800-3200meters at a time.

Cranked out 12,000 meters this week and will try to creep toward 15000. If I don't get any better at swimming after 2 months of this, I'm gonna go duathlon! (Just kidding!) My shoulders are definitely feeling the beat-down - whew!

Your shoulders are feeling beaten down? Are you sure your form is 100%?

The only good thing about swimming is that if you're willing to put in the yardage (or meter...age), you will get better.

And I'm totally jealous of your swim speed that I'll never, ever reach no matter how hard I train. Foot in mouth

x2.
When your form is dialed in, you will feel your lats engaging, and your triceps at the end of your pull.  Your shoulders should be the least sore of the three muscles.  Be kind to your shoulders - they are delicate joints easily injured and can be slow to heal.

It wasn't until last month that I found the groove and this happened.  Since then I have loved swimming.  I need to step up the frequency and yardage but when I do go I cannot believe how much different things feel now.  It is so much less tiring than it used to be now that I got my stroke lined up a little better.  No more sore shoulders and as a result, my running is more enjoyable as well.  I'm by no means a fast swimmer but I feel like I could go forever now.

Actually, now you mention it, my tris are in fact, sore! I think I have a pre-existing right shoulder labral tear, as it gets irritated very easily whereas my weaker left shoulder doesn't have any troubles. Fortunately, it only acts up when I'm pushing pretty hard - which I currently am, in terms of volume. After a year of no speed gains (after a big initial one from a major technique overhaul), I'm curious as to how much better I can get in 2-3 months of swimming of 10,000-12,000m per week.

While bumping up your yardage is definitely good, even better is to swim with a masters group at your new pool, if possible.  I'd pretty much guarantee you gain significant speed.  Even following the WIB, doing 12K smart every week over just doing 12K every week makes a huge difference
