Subject: get on it then!

I suggest that at least 2 BTers come forward to act as captains and then hash out the details on picking teams, terms of challenge, etc. Get feedback from interested folks, then post the rules.

We're heading into a long weekend; it would be good if you could move on this quickly, post the rules and let people start working on hitting their goals. July has 5 weekends, btw.

Age grouped teams sound verrrrrrry interesting, btw.

How about just a running challenge?  Bricks are hard on the body and should only be done once a week at the most.  I don't want people getting injured with something so strenuous.  Plus, you can't do bricks during race week.

How about a TRI Challenge?

Set goals for all 3 sports. If you hit 95% of your swim, 80% of your bike, 100 of your run then your TRI goal attainment would be 92%

OR you could weight the goals with swimming carrying more weight or whatever you see fit.

Rollin' Thunder, I really like how you've structured your training goals. What are you training for? And to take it a step further, would you consider your 1:10:100 to be bike focused? I'm just trying to figure out what would work for me.

-----------------------------------

Great question. I have two more races planned for the year -- a 1/2 IM distance race on July 16th and an Olympic at the end of August. I keep telling myself I would consider doing Silverman in November if my 1/2 IM goes well.

I have based my training numbers on various things I have read. I come from a running background, so keep that in mind. I recently read some research a guy did for I believe his Masters in Exercise Physiology (I amy be wrong on his degree and emphasis) that determined those individuals that have more bike volume did better in their IM distance races and recovery than those individuals with lower bike volume. I have found this to be true as my runs are much eaaier on the legs and I am recovering much quicker from my long runs than I used to. I try and objectively measure this through heart rate during subsequent workouts.

I think my training this month was bike heavy, but I also feel I kept my running and swimming volume at an appropriate level for a 1/2 IM. The additional time spent on the bike has just been a bonus.

My goal at my 1/2 IM is to get off of the bike feeling fresh. My secondary goal is to begin base building for IM training starting in about October of this year. Not only would I like to finish an IM, but with everything going well, my goal would be to finish under 14 hours. It would be tough, but with the right training volume, I think I can do it.

Does my training work? I am not sure -- I will tell in July 17th. I can tell you I am spending anywhere between 13 and 16 hours in training each week and besides fatigue that is expected, I feel good.

Thanks for asking.

Mike

If we kept the brick challenge idea, couldn't we just each make the goal not some wildly outrageous amount (like the previous challenges) but whatever would fit into our personal training goals and race schedules but still presents a challenge?   We could have a minimum time/distance acceptable for each brick (across the board), and then tally them as in the number of bricks done during the challenge. So if someone has a race coming up they could set their brick goal number low enough that they don't have to do any during their tapering period, but can still participate in the challenge.  We could still do it in teams that way.  Would any of that work?  I don't know.  I am new to this whole triathlon thing, let alone BT Challenge thing.

I would really like to see some sort of Co-Ed team action going on.  The record keeping burden could be delegated out to a team captain.  7-8 people per team so that if an injury crops up the team isn't decimated.

As far as the bricks go, I'm not too sure I could commit to this since my bricks tend to only happen on the weekends when training time is available.  If it were a weekday brick it would only be a short little 30-45 min lunchtime brick, which I'm not sure is too effective.  I would REALLY like to get into a monthly cycle where we did swim one month, bike the next, run the following and then cycle around.  I think it would provide some type of monthly focus on one sport at a time.  There was a month where we had a swim challenge and a run challenge.  I was too torn between the 2 during that month and ended up just focusing on the swim.  I'm seeing the benefits from these past two months of focus too.  My swim and bike have improved more that I thought possible.

So there's here's 0.02 in a nutshell.  For July:  7-8 person teams (can be co-ed, but doesn't have to be),  Run Challenge (sorry Nikki     but I'd be ok with any of the 3 sports), Charity Focus just like June (pledge before the challenge, losers give 100%, winners give min of 50% of the pledge).  Winners decide the charity.  Each team has a captain responsible for reporting on a agreed to frequency the achievement.  Lowest and Highest %'s dropped (in case of sandbagging or injury).

Also, whatever challenge we decide to do, can I still participate even though I'm going to be out of the country and unable to train (in LIBERIA, AFRICA!!!!) for 2 of the weeks?  Could I just set a goal for myself that I can accomplish in 3 weeks instead of 2?  Or is that not allowed?  I just thought a challenge would get me motivated to keep training hard before I go, and when I come back (the times I might be lacking motivation).

I definitely think this is the logical next step! Add in Jeff's rules and we got us a challenge!!!

Cycling monthly challenges sounds very smart....

Would we be able to pull off an age group challenge?

I think your idea is very good.  I think a brick challenge is a bit much.  I have 2 races on back to back weekends in July, in addition to doing two cycling races.  No bricks are going to happen until after 7/17 or after 7/26.

I'd rather focus on one sport, or the idea of setting goals for our training plan for July.

I too worry about people injuring themselves with the brick challenge. I like the idea of a rotating challege to allow for a focus on any given month.  Or the tri challenge like Renee suggested.  Smaller, co-ed teams, would also be nice.

Not sure I'm in for a July challenge, but I'll be watchin' it!

Ya, I agree . . . brick challenge isn't looking so good now after reading all your concerns.  A co-ed tri or run challenge sounds much better.  I'm selfish and want to get the most out of this, so my vote is for a running challenge (my worst and most dreaded event)!  But, I still don't know if it's okay for me to participate for only 2 of the 4 weeks.  I don't know the rules!

Thanks for your thoughts, Rollin' Thunder. I'm sure you'll do really well at your half IM next month. Just looking at my training logs, I noticed that my ratios are a little different. I do a little more swimming and running and a little less biking, but I'm a short course kinda gal. But I did notice how much my improved bike fitness helped me on Sunday so time on the bike is time well spent, IMHO.

If we're going to go with a single sport challenge, I'd prefer running (because it is my favorite), and I love the idea of having AG challenge. If we do go with running, I suggest that once we hit 100% of our individual goal, that's it. I mean you can keep running if you want, but it won't count toward anything. That way we won't encourage any overuse injuries. And yes, if you can only compete for two weeks, just make sure your mileage or time goals reflect that. We want as many people to enter as possible since the true payoff is a nice donation to charity.

That's right, young 'un. Shouldn't you be getting ready for bed?

If we go with AG, and depending on how many sign up, I was thinking more along the lines of standard tri AG breakouts: 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, etc. If we don't have enough folks entered, perhaps we could just do 10 yr increments: 20-29, 30-39, etc.

Doesn't really matter.
