Subject: Relay Swimmer & Sprint Race Same race?
Hello

My daughter wants to do a  triathlon relay with me.  She wants to do the run part of  the race and  now her husband wants to complete  the bike ride part of the race so  I will be the swimmer.  OK  I am not a good swimmer  but this  is more about a good  family experience than the race.  I am hoping to get them interested in triathlons and this seems like a good start.

I  was wondering if it is possible to complete the swim for a relay team, then use pass off the timing  chip for the relay team and then complete the race myself as  an individual.  I will gladly pay the the additional fee for the sprint.  Two timing chips and two transition areas. I will of course discuss this with the race  director before moving forward.

Has anyone ever done this?

So should I explore the double race or just work  on a positive experience for my daughter and her husband?

Kevin

assuming you either go off in the same wave, or there is a timing mat at the start i would not see an issue with this working from a tech standpoint.

Yep. I and several other people did this last year at the Bali International Tri, and they use ChampionChip. Contact the RD--this is quite doable.

I don't see any reason why not since you are the first athlete.  In our local marathon there were more than a few doing the relay and the full race - they just took the starting leg like you are talking about doing.

I have done that a couple of times at a sprint in Wisconsin. The RD did not approve it, but I did it anyway. Somebody else signed up for the team, and I registered myself. I wore 2 chips, transferred the correct one for the relay, and then continued on for myself. I did rack my bike with the elite group (I am not an elite, but elites started with relays) so I wouldn't be too obvious.

Maybe I shouldn't have gone against the RD, but I figured since I was paying the correct amount and using my name (for insurance), what would the harm be.
