Total Time = 3h 19m 31s
Overall Rank = 39/282
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 7/31
Pre-race routine:

Had 1/2 bagel at about 4:30 with some water, and a Marathon Bar an hour later with more water.
Event warmup:

Light jogging up the finish line hill so I could see when I'm close at the end, short interval spurts. ~15 minutes before race starts I did some w/u swimming and sighting for the banner that marked the end of the swim course.
Swim
  • 37m 11s
  • 1650 yards
  • 02m 15s / 100 yards
Comments:

Beautiful water conditions. Crystal clear. Swimming over the reef was like snorkeling. Even saw a huge sea turtle on the long stretch and a sea snake about 100m off shore.

Started off average but by the first buoy started catching up the girls that sprinted ahead of me at the beginning. By the second buoy started to catch the slower girls from the wave ahead of me.
What would you do differently?:

Pay more attention to the swim and less attention to the turtles???!
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

Mount line for bike was on an uphill on a narrow golf cart path (we weren't allowed in the grass for fear of DQ) so I ran a bit further to where the path level off enough to get into shoes.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Bike
  • 1h 50m 28s
  • 24.8 miles
  • 13.47 mile/hr
Comments:

Was doing great for the first 6 miles or so. Then on an uphill I got a flat. Took ~10 minutes (I'm not very good at that) to fix. Then gears started changing themselves on two uphill segments (not a comfortable feeling). The next sharp downhill found my rear wheel locking up and fishtailing when I applied brake to control speed. Thought I was going to DNF with a hospital visit! Finally able to unclip and stop and pulled over to fix. That's when I realized I had never locked the skewer in the rear wheel when I changed the tire (DUH!) so I lost more time with that (also why the gears were going funky). Felt blessed that I made it thru the bike segment at all!
What would you do differently?:

Learn to change tires more quickly. Also somehow get some downhill training so I don't feel so out of control with the speed (no way to do that around here).
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

Knew I blew any chance at placing with such a poor bike so just decided to relax. Got the fuel belt, knee brace and running shoes on more casually than usual.
What would you do differently?:

Had my bike gone smoother I would've gone faster. As it was I didn't feel the need to rush.
Run
  • 51m 52s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 08m 22s  min/mile
Comments:

Felt great on the run (had so much rest from that disastrous bike leg!). Passing lots of people the whole way. Those golf course hills were brutal...the downhill was so steep that I almost felt that I was going to fall forward and roll down it, and it took everything I had not to walk the uphill! What a great challenge.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Maybe push a little harder (I always say that when I feel good at the end).
Post race
Warm down:

Light jogging, lots of walking around.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Flat tire, stupidity when changing it, wimpiness on downhills.

Event comments:

Outback Steakhouse provided lunch after the race. Also had massages for all competitors. Had a great time with Bob's teammates from TNT as well as meeitng Stan (Flyboy) at prerace pasta party, during/after the race and the TNT dinner/dance after the race.

Looking back at the results, I probably would've placed 1st or 2nd in my age group had that silly flat not happened (probably should've never looked at that!).  However, it did happen and even while I was changing the flat I remembered something Bob said before we even got there "even if you get a flat, at least it's in Maui!".

Hey Sharon,

It sounds like you had a strong race. Sorry about the flat. I'm glad to hear that you pulled over and closed your quick release. We'd hate to hear about an accident. The fishtailing must have been scary. Great time on the run, especially with the extra time in the transistion (I'm assuming your T2 time is wrapped up in your run time?).

Congrats,
Jen

Whew- you're alive!! Seriously, you are really lucky about not crashing on the bike! That was so cool that you saw a sea turtle on the swim!! I don't know if I would like being able to see things so clearly underwater... I mean, if there's a shark, I really don't want to know about it!
Welcome back, and I'm not sure if I'm doing the aquathlon- should I?

Hey Sharon...sorry about the bad luck on the bike..not much you can doo about that stuff.  The swim sounds awesome with all the sea life.  that would be really fun.  Swim in FL you are lucky to be able to make out your own hand in front of you.  Great run.  Take care and hope you enjoyed your trip anyway -SMO
