Anyone who wants to get into a challenge for July and wants to bike more, check out the TdF Challenge here.  This will be my first year doing it, but everyone raves about it.  You just have to pick the number of times (stages) you will ride between July 3 -25 and either the mileage or time.  You will be assigned a team later in the week.  It should be fun.

a question for anyone who can swim straight...Wink  I seem to have a problem (in the pool) lately, in that I vere off to the right near the end of my 25 metres.  just wondering if I am doing something wrong in my pull?  I am my first ows in less than an month and am worried that I am going to get way off course or have to swim with my head up the whole time!

on the numb toes...i have that too - and i have had my bike fit.  I asked about it when i did the fit and he said it could be one of two things  a) there's a nerve in the bottom of the foot right by your heal apparently that can cause it and; b) there's nerves up by your butt bones that can cause it.  I still have the problem, but the bike fit made it better, as I ride longer I find it doesn't happen as much though or it takes more mile now for it to bug me.  pedalling with my feet in different positions seems to help?

scogz1 - 2010-06-30 4:50 AM Kate, I'm going to say it because I don't know what "LBS" stands for?? I think its going to have to do with getting a bike fitting done, yes?? If so the bike fitting I had done a couple months ago found that I was leaning too far forward which was causing my hand/shoulder to get a little numb. After the bike fit it went away, with a new shorter stem. I agree with everyone else, it probably will be something simple but that you might need an experts eye to notice.

General Sir, nice job sparking up the group!

Steve LBS is local bike shop, but no shame in not knowing, I had to ask a few months back and myself should go for a proper bike fit but i just seem to have a mental block on the cost of £75 !

Thanks for the info, I should have asked my kids, they know all that texting lingo and all

Hi Everyone,
I am still here.   Just been busy training, trianing, training.  Also there were 2 lay-offs last week and somehow I seem to have inherited both jobs....with no extra $$$$.  Funny how that works huh?  Anyway since I have no training in these jobs I am struggling to learn them and thus my time on BT has taken a nose dive.

Good luck to anyone racing this fine 4th of July weekend!

Hey everyone! Nice to hear of some good training going on in here.  Sounds like a few great races have been completed as well.

I am struggling a bit to find some swim mojo.  We have had pool closings due to thunderstorms and not great water quality issues at nearby beaches.  That and some changes in my and the pool schedule have left me very dry in the swim department.  I need to get it back together pretty quickly before I lose what little swim speed and endurance I had (and believe me it was very little)!  Any suggestions, tactics or threats would be greatly appreciated!

Not an expert opinion, but I used to veer as well.

If you are veering off to the right, there is a good chance that you are crossing your mid-line when you pull with your left hand.  You could try either pulling wider with your left arm, or more towards your center with your right; whichever feels best, and that should straighten you out.

Sound like pretty expert advice to me.  I agree with what she said.  It also may be that your left are is weaker than your right.

I can give you an example of the workouts that I have been doing swimming. I currently do about a 1:35-1:45/100 right about the middle of the pack I believe.

Good luck
Shioban

1800 yards
Warm up- 100 swim
100 kick
100 swim
4x100 (75 drill/25swim)
3x100 hard 30 second rest
100 easy
Cool down 200 pull w/buoy

This is just an average workout. So, it changes every week. Some days I just get in and warm up and do 10x100 on 2:00...get much closer to that 2 minute mark by the 10th 100. No rest if you do it on 2:00. This is a perfect incentive to swim faster so you have more rest time.
I'm certainly no expert either.

Good luck

Happy 4th for all of you celebrating.

I just managed a ride on my new seat ). I got a specialised women specific that was measured for me. It made such a difference I wasn't in agony but still had tingling feet - I think that's just resting on them too much - It was so much better than before then.

Hope you're all doing well and enjoying the summer so far.

hola!

I cant help you on technique but can say from experience dont build up OWS and a fear of getting the line wrong, everyone goes zig zag to some extent, its hard to see the bouys in the water so sometimes you just have to get a few strokes in, then try to sight and correct your line if needed, i probably dont sight enough, but find a landmark easy to see in the right direction, not the bouy as its hard to spot, then i maybe swim for a few mins and then resight the bouy. As long as your headed in the right direction you will be fine, i swam yesterday thimking i was off line only to see some others way off, dont follow someone for too long, yes follow them for a bit but then resight yourself. (they had the canoeist tap them up !)

Hi Guys & Gals !

Hope you all had a fab 4th july, does it get boozy ?

So being here in the uk i had a race yesterday, report is below.

http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=215862

I had some serious physical problems, i got cramp in the swim bike and run which has never happened before, so if poss clould you amalize my pre race prep and comment.

Friday, checken brocholi pasta for dinner, loads of water
sat, cereal, banana, grilled chicken, cereal bar, tuna sandwich, beetroot, pickled onions, ham, salmon & pasta, brown brread  pineapple, strawberrys. loads of water.

Now i ate the fruit at about 10pm sat night and it was probably half a pineapple, do you think it was a sugar issue ? too much of it ? i drank loads of water for the past few days so must have been hudrated.

All my cramping issues have been magnesium related as I get in enough potassium.   I suggest trying a good magnesium supplement and see how it works.  DOn't get a Calcium/Magnesium supp coz the calcium jumps into the receptors first leaving the magnesium nowhere to go.

If you are not used to drinking lots of water naturally then you force it in, in the last couple of days, you can throw your system off and actually dehydrate yourself, by diluting your electrolytes.    I normally drink a gallon every day and I really dont drink more just coz a race is coming up.

Hope this is helpful

I agree w/Serenity. It sounds like you were well hydrated.  Was it very warm for your race? If you were sweating a lot you might have needed additional salt not just water.  This could be esp true if you trained in heat for the week before your race and were only replacing sweat with water.  My other thought was fatigue.  What did your training volume look like in the past week or 2?  If you haven't build in some recovery days your muscles might have just been too tired to push as hard as you wanted.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for your comments, i had an after thought on low salt levels, the 2 days before i was very active, not training active but home active with gardening and stuff and i did sweat a lot, infact on friday i had a conversation with mrs T about whether i sweated abnormally, so this maybe the issue. It has been v hot here in the uk for a few weeks.

I do drink a lot daily, a gallon is 4.5 litres a day, i probably drink  3-4 litres on non training days and 5/6+ on training days. So dont think i raised my hydration specifically, but this does go hand in hand with possible low salt levels.

Also on the bike i had an electrolytes drink but i made it too strong and was hardly able to drink any so it does seem it may have been that.

So just to clarify, that you know of, no specific concerns about the sugar / fruit levels ?

I have felt more fatigued today than i ever have before on the day after racing, so i am thinking something definately was not right in my diet prep for the race.

Thanks again for your help!

T

I have never heard of too much sugar being a problem unless you're are a diabetic. Your body would handle the sugar from the fruit pretty quickly after it was consumed so it is doubtful that played a role in how you felt the next day.  I am no expert in race nutrition but that's my thought for a medical standpoint.

 Hope you are feeling recovered!

Oh and to answer your question-yes the 4th of July celebrations usually get boozy.  Not always a safe holiday since it also usually involves fireworks!

Hi All

I am feeling better today, even thou I only got about 3 hrs sleep due to aching restless legs. I remembered I had some compression tights and they seem to be helping so hopefully I will get some sleep tonight and be box fresh tomorrow.

Having done some research into my cramping and with your help, I am putting it down to two things, 1 having low salt/electrolyte levels, and 2 probably more concerning, I have lost some fitness over the past month or so.

So I am having a rest this week with no training plan in place, I may do something but it will be casual but from here on I am going to get serious (or serious by my own definition anyway lol) with my training and really start sticking to a routine, pushing myself a bit more than I have done, and introduce some sets to my training, rather than just going for a run, bike, swim. I am actually going to add in some objectives other than overall time and distance.

I have decent base fitness, or atleast I think I do. If anyone has any suggestions for swim/bike/run workouts they are willing to share please throw them at me.

Also its time to review my diet and alcohol intake.  (well, after the wedding I am attending on Saturday anyway!)

So here it is, a public announcement, I Tiesim do promise to take this sport seriously now and commit to training for improvement, not base.

Oh dear, Mrs T is not going to be happy with me ! lol !!

I am glad you figured out what might have happened.  As far as committing full time, really make sure Mrs. T is good with it.  I know you might have been joking, but you seem to have an "all or nothing" attitude and you don't want any issues arising because you are always training.

Are you looking for workouts just for this week or a longer period of time?  If you are looking for stuff to do this week, you can do some LT tests or a Time Trail in the water to get your T-Pace.  Let me know if you want more details.

Anybody catching any of the TourDeFrance?? I have not been a big Pro bike fan, still not really but watching The Tour the last few days has got me setting reminders on the cable box to catch the next days action I can't imagine going as hard as these guys every day for 3 weeks. Amazing effort even after the crashes its almost like watching Nascar waiting for the crash you know is coming

T, glad to see you figured it out. Look at some of the plans you can import into your training blog, since your on recovery week.

I LOVE Tour de France season.  I got hooked back in the 80s when I lived in Minnesota and Greg Lemond was riding.  Back then you only could get a brief paragraph in the paper.   Lance's fame getting it on TV has been good. Once you start watching it is easy to get hooked. The strategy and ridership is amazing!! I even like the commentators inside jokes.

I think it is below 90 now and a breeze is kicking up off the water. I am going to attempt an hour "run".  Think it will mostly be a walk with a few steps of running every few minutes!  Be cool team!!
