a triathlon coach wrote that, "it takes 10 days to see the results of a hard workout." Just thought I would share that for folks unsure of how to approach their race week preparation..don't try and sneak in that last hard workout a few days before, you'll only tire yourself out..better to err on the safe side of too much rest vs. the opposite.

Generally, I agree, but I think it depends on what kind of race you are doing and what kind of shape you are in.  A hard workout is relative.  If you are in shape for a half IM, you don't really need to dial things down a week before doing a sprint - just train through it.  ON THE OTHER HAND, if you are stretching to do a sprint, you probably want to dial things back a bit.

I have also been told that you should try to do 10-15 min of each discipline 1 or 2 days prior to race day - just to keep the feel of things.

It might take 10 days to see the positive results of a hard workout, but the pain starts immediately...

i've read too that there are no benefits to a hard workout late in the game. all your previous training, provided you did it right, will be enough. better to be rested than overtrained. it is preferable to be undertrained than overtrained. i've seen it stated as better 10% undertrained than 1% overtrained.

As my dad always said "FIRST YOU FEEL THE POWER" " THEN YOU FEEL THE PAIN"

tboepple is exactly right. If you have several races this season, you might want to train right through your early season races, particularly if they are shorter than your focus race. An adult body, generally speaking, can only benefit from two, possible 3, full tapers a year. That translates into one, possibly two, tapers in a triathlon season. A well executed taper takes lots of planning and experimenting, for each body reacts differently to taper. I would suggest scheduling a rest week for the week prior to your early season races. And definitely schedule a short workout of each sport within 72-48 hours of race day. You will learn a lot from these early season races.
