I can do it. I force my head down following my last stroke, see my knees then pike. I'm then ready to push off the wall. Here's the issue. Every single time I flip turn, water gushes up my nose. I don't know why. I can't do them during my workouts cause I have to stop everytime gagging and hacking up water.

Am i not exhaling out my nose while flipping? Am i exhaling to hard while flipping then running out of breath to exhale, thus letting water gush in? What say you flip turn gurus?

Umm, you tell us.  Are you exhaling while flipping?  If so, I'm gonna guess that you are exhaling too much too fast.  There doesn't need to be a large exhale to keep water out, just enough pressure to keep it at bay.  Steady even pressure and at a easy enough rate that you have plenty of air to finish the turn and get swimming again before needing air.

Usually when I get water up my nose its from taking my last breath too far out and running out of air to force through my nostrils.  I don't think about my breathing much during my flip turn, its pretty automatic, so I don't know exactly how I handle it.  Sometimes if I know its coming I'll scrunch my nose real tight and it will limit the pain.

scrunch your upper lip up to your nose and exhale through your nose. makes a weird face but it keeps water from going up my nose.

Wowsa, great info in here!  I did ugly flip turns for my whole workout today for the first time, and the lip thing is a funny idea...but if it works I'm all for it.  =)

So...I'm supposed to "put my head down, see my knees, THEN pike"?  Any other cues???

Just don't squint when your scrunch your face...It can make your goggles leak.
