I remember my first vividly as it was in grad school and someone convinced me to do it because a mutual friend said that I was a "runner".  I didn't think that running 12 miles a week to stay in shape qualified me as such.

Either way, the race went pretty well until the 6 mile mark when my stomach contents wanted to escape.  Didn't end up happening, but that's what you get when you eat a mini-bagel with cream cheese as pre-race nutrition.  I ended up finishing around 2:03- I bonked at 12 because I thought I was at 12 when I was actually at 11 so I started to speed up well before I should have.

The moral of the story was that I was hooked, did 4 more 1/2s a bunch of other longish runs, my first full this year and got into tris last year.  All in all, I'm glad someone assumed I was the athlete I have become.

I trained with a run/walk plan but managed to run through all but one aid station, but dang did it hurt.

My first half marathon was during my first HIM last april. I was undertrained, cramped on the bike and ended up hobbling 13 miles in a run .1 mile, walk .1 mile to a 2:40 half marathon. Pure sufferfest.

My first and only standalone half marathon was last november. I planned on running through the water stations only grabbing water on the run, which I did, and do 10mm (2:10), which I went slightly over (2:11). I just had nothing in me at the end to pick up that 1 minute.

Although is only 1/2 the distance of a full marathon, it is to be respected.

nc452010 - 2010-04-12 11:38 PM Did you walk?  Any?

I'm thinking I'd like to work up to this.......and time isn't really an issue.  I just wanna do it.

Was your goal to complete it, without stopping (even at aid/water stations)?  Did you plan to walk a "little"?

Forgive my barrage of Q's.

Come out to the Mistletoe in December.  It was my first half and it's a nice little race.  Around 800-900 people raced last year.  The course isn't flat but it's not too hilly.  The only hill that really hurts is at mile 9 climbing out of Reynolda Village.  I took one walk break at the aid station at mile 6 to take a gel and get enough water in me to count.  Probably walked for 15 seconds.  Last half I didn't walk at all since I was carrying my Infinit with me in water bottle.

I remember my first half marathon:  it was 15 years ago and I had completed 2 full marathons before doing a half.  It was a beautiful summer day but not too hot.  I was too young (27) to be overly concerned about injury and did run without stopping.  I think my time was 1:54 or something like that.  Nowadays I definitely add walk breaks and my time reflects that.

I needed to do a 13-mile training run that weekend, so I figured a half-mary would be good.

It rained the whole time. I got ridiculously lost (to the tune of adding a 10k). Half of it was on hilly trails and by the time I got there, they were mudfests. Climbed up, slid down.

Yeah, I don't think I'm going to forget that one soon

My first "official" 1/2 marathon was after I had finished a full one.  So I had run numerous times over 13.1 in my training, but never officially raced the distance.  I did it sick, so I remember it well.  Didn't have a great time compared to my abilities.  But I did run most of it with my old boss which was cool!

My first was in 2002. It was the final race of a summer long series. I had never done a race longer than a 10K. I did a few long runs in training, but I wasn't following a program or even really knew what I was doing. The course was very hilly. The online profile showed hills in the first half and flat the last few miles. I trained to run on that kind of a course. On race day they had changed the course. Now it was hilly at the start, flat in the middle and hilly again at the end. I had figured to run about 1:50 and was on pace for that through about 10 miles, but those hills at the end took a lot out of me and I finished 1:58ish. I don't recall walking any of it, but may have walked briefly at the final aid station.

I don't ever plan to walk in a race. Sometimes it happens at an aid station, but usually only for a few seconds at most. For me, I've always figured if I was planning to walk in a race then I hadn't trained sufficiently.

Even though the result was less than hoped for, it gave me confidence to prepare for my first marathon.

Yep, I remember mine.  May 2008, the inaugural Marine Corps Half Marathon in Fredericksburg, VA.  No time goal, but I planned to run the entire time except to get some water at the aid stations (I've since mastered running and drinking.. )  I accomplished my goal, even though there was a pretty big hill around mile 10 and it seemed like everyone was walking it.  I didn't take any nutrition with me.  I'm not sure I even knew that gels existed until I saw people eating them during the race.  I finished in 1:53:34 and loved the distance.  13.1 is still my favorite distance to race.

Yup, 2007. My sole goal was to finish without stopping. I did.
My longest run before then had been 11 miles.
I carried Nuun in my own water bottle but did grab Gatorade at the aid stations - without stopping.

Race report and pics here.

You always remember your first big race.  Loved my first half, Shamrock in Virginia Beach. Wound up 7 minutes faster than I had planned.  I used the Galloway half marathon book and highly recommend it. While he advocates walking in a marathon he didn't in the half training I did walk very briefly at the water stations simply because I can’t run and drink out of a cup without choking lol! Train to run the whole race. Build yourself up to be able to run 15 miles so you don't hit a wall on your last 2 miles.  Learn to pace yourself and make sure you have enough energy so you don't crash at the 10-11 mile bonk zone. GU will not help at that point! And best of all savor the first race, go to the after celebration, thank volunteers, and smile for the camera!

Good luck!

Water stops-  The key is to make sure you take in enough water for the conditions.   I can drink on the run but when I do, I usually do not end swallowing  very much  I either have squeezed the cup to make sure too much does not come out  at one time when I drink, or it sloshes out before I get a chance lol.     This being said, most water stops  that bit is all I need.   In some races I only take those small sips at most water stops and thus run through them.  Other times due to conditions etc I may walk 2-3 stops and MAKE sure I take enough fluid.   It depends on how many stops there are, how hot it is etc.    But If I walk for a few seconds to take a drink, I do NOT consider that  "having to walk"  in a race.     Its make sure I have enough fluids.

The time result at the end of the race is all that matters to me.

I have my first half in 2 weeks so I'll let you know!  I signed up in January, and promptly missed 6 weeks with a respiratory infection.  I was nervous about building up, and thought I would do a walk/run plan, but I'm not very good at walking.  I stop at lights (and plan to walk through the aid stations), but have run up to 12.5 miles with walking only at lights.  My training runs have been about 10:45/min or faster, and definately negative splits.

I think I remember my first one.  I know I didn't walk any portion of the race, but if someone had footage of me walking a few feet through and aid station or two, I guess I wouldn't be surprised.

I don't remember when I did a 1/2 marathon, whether it was during a training run or an actual run.  I think it was incorporated and surpassed during my first marathon actually and was doing okay.

I ran the whole shebang of the first one.
THere's no shame if you have to do run: walk intervals or walk aid stations.  My second one I had to walk aid stations cause I had an injury and probably should have not done the race....

My first nalf mary the goal was to finish.  Second one was the same just because of the injury.
Numbers 3 and 4 had a goal to take the PR (it dropped both times)

As basically non-runner I did my first 13.1 unplanned while training for 1/2 marathon in Oct.  Late last summer I was scheduled to do 8mi as my weekly long run, but felt so good I kept running.  And running.  Ended up stopping at 13.1 just because that was my goal event distance.  I changed my goal to do full marathon at that Oct event, forced the training schedule, and completed my 1st marathon but hurt my knees in process-but that's another story.
