A friend mentioned that the next time I take my bike to the shop I should have these (?) inserts put into my tires. They are supposed to be installed between the tire and the inner tube and help prevent flats? Does anyone have any experience with something like this? It sounds great. My bike is a road touring bike, not a tri bike, so I'm not too worried about adding a few extra ounces. :-)

I have used them on a bmx bike and they worked great. As you can imagine bmx causes a lot of stress on tires, and my son was no exception, in fact he was very tough on his bike, He has a bent fork now from his antics. It saved a lot of time for me in not having to repair flats all the time.

Try it you might like it!!

I believe the are called Mr Tuffy (http://www.bikepro.com/products/tubes/tubes-tuffy.html) a friend of mine have it and he love them, I have the Specialized Armadillo tires, 5 months and no flats. But if you have good tires the best way to go is with Mr Tuffy.

I had the shop (Zion Cyclery, Zion, IL.) put a set of high end tires on my new wheels. It is a tire/tube combo. similar to a sew-up racing tire but still a clincher. they put a substance in the tube that acts to seal small puntures (not SLIME but a similar product). So far I think they're just great.
Please don't tell my wife that per tire they cost more that my car tires!

ok, I need to follow up. I have called every nearby bike shop and not a single one carries the tuffy tape in stock. They are all suggesting that they are not used that often, heavy, and all are a b*tch to install. They suggest that most people (and most means very few) are using a kevlar product called SLICK SKIN. Any additional thoughts????

Here's 3 that I'd recommend, and the links to Bike Nashbar where I think it's a good place to buy tires. The IRC Triathlon Duro Road is a great deal at that price BTW

Vredestein Volante (145 PSI) @ $29.95 moderately priced:

The Michelin Erilium @ $19.95 so it's a little cheaper:

IRC Triathlon Duro Road Tire (125 PSI) @ $14.95 (on sale - a GREAT deal!):

And while you're ordering, get a few extra tubes and keep them on hand as well...for only $2.95 each:
