I had a pretty severe mountain bike crash last night. To be honest, I don't know exactly what happened(I woke up in an ambulance). I remember going over the handle bars and not much else, my buddy says I went head first into a tree. The doctor said that my helmet saved me from a lengthy hospital stay and possibly saved my life, it''s now in two pieces. I eneded up with: mild concussion, bruised shoulder(can't even move my left shoulder), two broken fingers and severly sprained ankle(can't walk). I go back today for tests on my shoulder and ankle to make sure that nothing is torn. Doctor says that it will be at least 4-6 weeks before I can get into any serious training again.

Wow, that did not sound like a lot of fun. Glad you made it through OK! Hang in there, the worst pain is 2 or 3 days after the crash when everything tightens up. Been there before, after a motorcycle crash. Helmets are your best friends!

Oh man! I'm glad that you're relatively sound after such a crash. Bumps and bruises heal, but you've only got one head.
Rest up, take care, and I'll say a prayer for you!

Wow - Praise God that you're still alive!!  I'd say you owe that helmet manufacturer a nice little note or testimonial thanking them for their product.

Also, I hope the tree is ok too......just kidding.  Glad to hear your injuries are relatively minor.  I predict you'll be training again in 3 weeks.

God Bless,
Dan

Thank God for helmets.
JayC keep us posted on the follow up Dr. visit.
Hope it's not any worse than the initial diagnosis.

I'm glad you're okay. It sounds like you could have been hurt much worse.

One of the few times I went mountain biking, it was on a whim. Hubby and I went off the regular trail onto the mountain biking trail. Not having planned on this, I wasn't wearing a helmet. I was very careful and went slow, but managed to rub up against a rock and the bike fell over to the side like it'd been pushed. After Hubby untangled me and the bike, I was left with such a bad deep bruise on my rear that I can still feel the scar tissue. Needless to say, I've never ridden offroad since.

Of course, my misfortune pales in comparison with yours. Again, it's good to know you'll be okay.

The good news is if your helmet is less than a year old, the manufacturer will probably replace it for free!

JayC,

Sorry about your crash, but thank goodness for the helmet or you probably would not even be able to type.

:-(

Hope you get well soon. The good news is that athletes repair quicker than our counterparts.
You'll be up and around before you know it.

Ow! Glad you are okay. Crashes like that are not fun at all.

This brings bad memories. I had a really bad crash about 8 years ago. I wedged the front wheel riding through a broken concrete jumble, and did a pretty nasty endo. I had a helmet on too, which cracked, but definitely saved me from a lot more serious injury. I didn't break anything, but due to landing on the concrete headfirst, I managed to cut my face up pretty bad ( it took 50+ stictches by a plastic surgeon to piece me back together ). Somehow, I managed not to break or sprain anything, just cut up my face.

Stick with the rehab they'll give you, especially on the ankle. The sprain will have stretched ligaments and tendons there, and you will want to make sure that heals strong. ( Playing soccer and lacrosse, I've rolled and sprained my ankles quite a few times ). The ankle circles and such that they'll probably have you do really make a difference in how quickly your regain strength in the joint.

Again, glad to hear you're okay, all things considered.

JayC:

What an awful experience. Don't be impatient with your recovery. I've learned from experience if you don't do it right, you could prolong the recovery. God bless and let us know how you're doing.
