Subject: USAT Level I clinic ?

Anyone have an opinion on taking this course for a beginner ?  I don't have any aspirations of becoming a coach anytime soon, but thought the course sounded very interesting, although the $525 fee is pretty steep.  Any thoughts appreciated.

Why would you do it if you do not want to coach?

I went a couple of weeks back in Maryland. Goos info but they did not teach me how to make a training plan for someone. I am going to have to find books to read to figure it out on my own.

525 (do you get the certification at the end of the weekend?) for the education and certification sounds pretty cheap to me!  but, agree with KSH, don't waste the money if you don't plan on trying to make some with it.

Not on my phone at work, so I can type more now.

You do not get your certification when the 2.5 days are done. Instead you get a take home test that you complete and mail in. Which is a bit antiquated as far as testing goes. I took a test for NASM (personal trainer cert) and it was online at a testing center.

So yeah you mail in your test and in 4-6 weeks you MIGHT get your certification back. If you don't, then they have probably called you and told you what you need to "fix". I guess you redo and mail it back in. Not clear on that part.

Anyways, before I went to the clinic was completely PUMPED about what they were going to cover. I had a lady who was ready to sign up as my first tri coaching client.

After the clinic was done, I felt like they did NOT teach me HOW to create a training plan. I mean really, we didn't cover enough about it. Which I know the mental side of sports is important, we could have spent 1 hour on that... instead of 3-4 hours. I wish more time had been spent on breaking down training plans.

Then when they covered how to create the bike training in a plan, they only used watts. Well, not too many AGers use WATTS on the bike. They use HR usually.

So I left feeling confused overall. I had to tell my client I could not, in my right conscious, be her coach, since I had NO CLUE (and still don't) how to create a training plan for her.

I am hoping that maybe I can apprentice a local tri coach and try to figure out how the heck to create a training plan for someone!
