Subject: Couch to HIM in 18 months - it can be done
Just thought I'd say that if I can do this, anyone can!
18 months ago, I was 18kg heavier than I am now (95kg then, 77kg now), hadn't swum or cycled for over 20 years, and was unable to run 1km without a rest.
Yesterday, I finished my first HIM in 6:02:18 and couldn't be happier!
For those of you who want to read more, the report is here: http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=206034

So if you have doubts, just aim high, as I did, and you can achieve anything!

Nigel

Congratulations!  I'm hoping to go from near couch (been running two years) to HIM in 7 months but my weak swimming is making that iffy right now.

I am so glad to see this post.  I have a HIM in August, and now I know with smart training, I can make this happen.

GREAT JOB!!!

Great time, and way to get off the couch!!!

The proof is in the persistence, which you really nailed.

It's probably possible to do Couch to IM in 12 months (just for example) but VERY FEW people would have the PERSISTENCE to do it ...

Nice job.  Way to set a goal and stay consistent; you may have officially finished this race yesterday but you really finished it with the discipline you've had these past 18 months.  I've heard it said that many have the will to win, but few have the will to prepare to win.  Finishing an HIM  is definitely winning!  This is more proof that there are no excuses.

Guys
Thanks for such wonderful comments - if I can help others achieve what I have done just by writing a few words then that makes it even more worthwhile!

For those that asked, "what's next?"....... well I don't know yet

Would like to eventually do a full IM but maybe not for another 18 months, so that I can nail the run part.  Definitely want to do this HIM again next year, unless we move to the other side of the country!  And more short course stuff to build speed.  Winter will be lots of running and maybe a half marathon in spring (heading into winter down here).  Had visions of doing a full marathon but not sure if I could train fully for that, but it's an option!

Thanks again for the comments, it's really made it an awesome start to the week!

xtra kudos for avoiding injury. I went from couch to HIM my first year and it cost me bad case of ITBS. You either have to have good dicipline, good genes or good luck to ramp it up this quickly, but great example that it can be done.
