Total Time = 1h 46m 47s
Overall Rank = /
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 0/
Pre-race routine:

up just after 5Am, ate at Waffle House - grits, eggs, toast and raisen bran. Wished I stuck with regular meal routine.

Event warmup:

Swam 400 m. warm up about 7:40 (race to begin at 8
Swim
  • 18m 10s
  • 600 yards
  • 03m 02s / 100 yards
Comments:

My watch was at 14 minutes, but race results said 18 '. I'm not sure what happened. Was I penalized? I almost did not go around the first buoy, was passing on inside of buoy and looked up, having to go back around. Overall, time very disappointing. I was expecting closer to a 12' performance. I tried to slow down too much...afraid of expending too much energy.
What would you do differently?:

Go all out, and train with a little more distance. Also, make sure I got in pool within 1 or 2 days of event. (I had not been in pool/swimming since Monday, the week of race -which was Sat).
Transition 1
  • 01m 40s
Comments:

had to run a bit before mounting on bike. THis was tough in road shoes due to incline going down, wanted to be careful not to fall.
What would you do differently?:

Have larger shoe horn, which I used to help with road shoe on at rack. Left heel got pressed down, and had a little delay with left shoe. May loosen laces a bit more. Time comparisons were good, in teh middle or better.
Bike
  • 50m 41s
  • 12.4 kms
  • 14.68 km/hr
Comments:

Tough! Was not prepared for hills at all. Low back hurting after 8 mi.
What would you do differently?:

More training. Have longer shoe horn. Not bad for only having ridden for around 3 weeks before race.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

T2 time and run together. I ran with shoes on, and dismounted after stopping. Nothing fancy.
What would you do differently?:

Side hurt (Upper right quad) at end of bike ride. Maybe due to too large of breakfast or too much fluid. (all pre-race).
Run
  • 36m 15s
  • 3.1 kms
  • 11m 41s  min/km
Comments:

Again, was not prepared for hills. Very tough. Had to stop on one for about 20 ". Low back and right upper gut pain.

Time included T2
What would you do differently?:

Train for hills. WOrk toward training for faster pace.
Post race
Warm down:

Drank water, stood around, had 1/2 banana. Stretched easy.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not enough work on speed training, and overall poor conditioning or not enough training in general, particularly with bike.

Event comments:

First race. Overall, I felt OK about performance, but very disappointed with swim. Felt actually good with run, under circumstances, as well as with bike.

I think you did great.....and heck, it was your first race!  Good luck with tweaking your training to make the next race even better!
