Subject: Questions about volunteering

I am thinking about volunteering for an IM event in order to help out AND get dibs on a chance for an early entry opportunity.

First, who to you contact to volunteer?  Is there some kind of agreement?  How do you get assigned to task?  I would figure, with my racing experience, I may be more helpfull in some areas than others.  Can you chose what you want to do, or is it assigned?

Hey Kido,

This is from my experience volunteering at IMLP:

1.) You register online at the website of whatever IM you want to volunteer for.
2.)  You'll be given a selection of available aid stations/duties and timeslots.  You pick your top three choices.
3.)  The head of the aid station or whatever will then start e-mailing the group with further details.
4.) DON'T LOSE THE VOLUNTEER SHIRT.  That's what will get you at the front of the sign-up line.

Hope this helps!  It's a lot of fun to help out.

I signed up to volunteer at IMLP for this year by registering on the IMLP web site. There's a form to fill out with 1st, 2nd & 3rd choice for job duties. Some time later I got an introductory email from the finish line team captain (my first choice was finish line). There is also space for comments and I suppose you could put special requests in there.

Online (so I hear) as described already.

You can volunteer for multiple areas.  My wife volunteered at CdA last year and spent several hours working at the information booth on Friday or Saturday.  Then she volunteered for body marking Sunday morning.  Then she volunteered as a finish-line catcher.  Each volunteer position had a different t-shirt and that t-shirt was your ticket into the area.  (You won't get into the finish corral if you're wearing a transition monitor t-shirt.)  She got 3 different shirts.

If you've got a special skill (Doctor/EMT) or special interest (bike repair), there's usually a place on the form to indicate that and they'll often times try to take advantage of that.

I'll also be at the finish line from 8pm to 12pm. Maybe I'll see you there.

How the heck did you guys manage that?  I've always wanted to work the finish line but every time I've gone to sign up it hasn't been available.  Do you have to register the day after the previous Ironman or something? :-)  I'm working Run Aid Station #1 myself this year.
