Subject: Prolotherapy?? Anyone heard/used it?
Hi All,

I have frequented this forum for several years, and read every stinking thread about back pain, painkillers, chiros and RMTs. I have had back pain for years. I have done Tris for about 5 years (one year off while pregnant). I am currently training for the Ride to Conquer Cancer (200km ride in June). I am also registered for a couple sprints this summer (although I am taking the dicey choice to NOT swim at all). With a 16 month old, and a self employed husband... I don't have time to do all three sports. Running is my WORST event, and I am biking by default. So swimming got the boot (FWIW - I got PB on the swim last year on my first race of the season with only 2 trips to the pool).

Anyway, I have been suffering with serious pain at night in the past 4-6 months. I can only sleep for about 4 hours and I wake up in serious discomfort. I can't bend over, can't pick up my baby, I can barely roll over without crying. My husband has to help me out of bed a lot... and is in charge of getting the baby out of bed. Once I am up for an hour or more... moving around and standing, the pain is almost gone.

After a zillion trips to the chiro (s), she has told me my joints are just too lax to hold an adjustment. i have seen both my local Ironman chiro for ART and one who on me through my pregnancy. She sent me back to massage. My doctor generally disregards my complaints of pain (I love him anyway) and will not perscribe NSAIDS. He claims if I can still stay active and happy I should not bother. I love and hate that prescription.

A recent trip to my RMT (it has been a while), she mentioned Prolotherapy. Apparently it is well geared to people with joint laxity - especially in the lower back region. I have done some internet research, but it seems to be an "out there" therapy. There are equal people who support and deny the claims. Does anyone have any experience with this? Heard of it?

My RMT has been my RMT for 10 years... since I was 22!! She says of all the things that have changed over the years, my back issues remain the same. She made the very valid point that a 32 year old should not be in tears getting out of bed in the morning. I also plan to have another baby sometime in the next 2 years, and if I can only get 4 hours of sleep now... I can't fathom what it would be like with a newborn and a toddler. Not to mention the general aches and pains of pregnancy.

FWIW our bed is 7 years old... that is one thing we have not replaced yet... although I do have a bed board and other pillows wedged here there and everywhere to keep my back straight.

I blame some of the issues on the Relaxin related to pregnancy, but even prior to age 18, I dislocated almost ever ball and socket joint in my body (knees, elbows, shoulders and one hip). They all instantly relocated except the elbow and the shoulder (in a wetsuit).

Anyway, does anyone else wanna throw a hat in the argument and offer suggestions to what I can do. In the meantime, I continue to constantly shift my weight... never sit for more than 1 hour at a time... and cry on my way out of bed in the morning.

Sorry for your pain - how frusterating! I don't have any personal experience with Prolotherapy, but a good friend that is an athlete (cyclist, rower, now training to be triathlete) had the therapy done on her Hip since it was turning into intense pain whenever she moved. I believe she had a good outcome and is now running around 4-5 miles and cycling her heart out so it can work. Do some research in your area and maybe interview the dr's that do the procedure and have them refer pts that are willing to share their experience with you.
Good luck and hope it turns out well!

Ok... i clearly missed the boat on the earlier post about this... I guess there was some interesting comments about it there.

I found the conversation quite interesting... and I am torn about what to do.

Having tried so many things for my back pain... I really don't know what to do. It is pretty depressing. Anyway, thanks for the response.

Tons to say but will limited to the essentials.
I am a pain specialist (MD not a chiro, therapist, or witch doctor)
and see tons of patient's with back pain.

In your case, have you ever had a complete work up?  A primary doctor (internal medicine,
family medicine) isn't the best person to see for pain issues.  You need to see someone
who specializes in musculoskeletal injuries.  But I would avoid a surgeon since they
only want to operate and they will be quick to dismiss your complaints.  Given the prolong
nature of your complaints, I hope an MRI and x-rays have been done.

In regards to prolotheraphy, I have performed these injections in some patients.
There is an interesting philosophy behind this method which makes it an
alternative type of medical care.  And most insurances don't cover it.  I give my patients
all the facts, no guarantee that it will work.  Research studies are few and far between.
However, some people do show improvement.  I would consider this a possible option
if the initial work-up has been completed.

Very sorry to hear about your back pain. Unfortunately, I have been there - tried every method short of surgery - meds, rest, PT, inversion tables, chiro, accupuncture, and even Prolotherapy. I noticed some improvements after 4 threatments....my discs felt better, but I still had hip/hamstring pain and was forced to discontinue running long distances and gave up playing basketball. I believe it helped, but as the previous member said, most of it is not covered by insurance, so it can be expensive. I focused primarily on cycling/swimming and the good news is that I no longer have the debilitating pain that you mention. I have recently gone back to PT just to strengthen the glutes, hip flexors, in hopes of running again, b/c I do miss tris, even if the most I can do is a sprint. PM me if you'd like more detail or contact info.

It has been awhile since I had an MRI... probably about 8 years ago. I was seeing a sport med doc... I honestly don't recall getting any real feedback at all. I was also focussed on fixing a knee injury for me (fallout from one of my dislocation, I had a huge bone chip wedged in my knee cap and couldn't straighten or bend my leg for a couple months prior to the Scope).

Most recently I did have a hip xray, but that was also about 3 years ago. They was nothing special on it either (that was looked at by my chiro with me...) I was having a lot of hip pain while running. No news is good news right?

I also (think) I herniated a disk about 3 years ago too. It was a sneezing while driving moment... thank goodness I was still in the back alley. Never so much pain in my life (and can now officially include giving birth). I went DIRECT to my chiro (I told my husband i would have to travel on the roof rack cuz I could not sit down)... and he sent me for xays.... but at the time there was a chance I pregnant, so I did not get the Xrays done. By the time 3 weeks had gone by, I was moving well enough, I just didn't bother. I tell you that sneezing is still one of the most panic inducing experiences I have on a day to day basis. I think I did a sprint tri about 4 weeks later.

In terms of prolo coverage... I can probably use my health benefit if it is not specifically covered. I am still on the fence. I hear there are some excellent doctors who do it out in Canmore... but I would sort of like some real life experiences vs. "Pro Prolo" websites.
